FIBA empowering more women in sports media with She Calls Game 2026 tip off

DECEMBER 23, 2025

MIES (Switzerland) - FIBA is set to showcase even more women's voices on the global basketball stage by providing new opportunities to tell the story of the sport with the launch of She Calls Game for 2026.

Dedicated to positioning FIBA as a leader in empowering women in sports media and also a valued part of FIBA's strategic priority, Women in Basketball, the initiative will generate more creative storytelling and authentic user-driven content from every region of the world.

Whether it's holding the mic or a camera, writing, or creating content, FIBA is committed to building an exciting and even more diverse range of options for aspiring women who currently have some media experience and want to kickstart their careers in the sport.

The campaign comes in the wake of a hugely successful inaugural She Calls Game initiative launched in 2022 by FIBA Media to bring a new female voice to the world feed commentary. That resulted in more women being part of media teams at multiple FIBA events. In addition to the previous roles offered of commentator and photographer, there will also now be content creator and writer roles available.

All successful applicants will receive support, guidance and training from a range of FIBA professionals across the various media areas and will also have the opportunity to gain experience at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournaments. For those selected for each position, this experience will extend to participating in the highly anticipated FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 in Berlin, Germany, next September, with commentator and content creator roles forming part of FIBA Media’s extensive production team.

FIBA Secretary General, Andreas Zagklis, stated: "We are delighted to be launching this next chapter of the initiative. We know there are many more talented and aspiring women with a passion for basketball who are ready to tell powerful and captivating stories about our sport."

"Being part of the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 is a huge and exciting incentive. But this is also about potentially building skills, capacity and an even stronger, diverse and talented media team for multiple FIBA events in the future - not just within the women's game."

Interested applicants are encouraged to act quickly, with deadlines for the various categories soon approaching in February 2026.

Shortlisted applicants will be involved in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournaments in March. The winners will be announced at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 Draw in April.

How to Apply?

Commentators: Submit a short commentary clip using the provided game moment here. Applicants can send their application via email by February 16.

NBA TO ENGAGE PROSPECTIVE TEAMS AND OWNERSHIP GROUPS FOR NEW BASKETBALL LEAGUE IN EUROPE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH FIBA

New League Would Offer Every Team in a FIBA-Affiliated Domestic League in Europe an Annual, Merit-Based Pathway to Qualify

MIES, SWITZERLAND AND NEW YORK, Dec. 22, 2025 – The National Basketball Association (NBA) and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) today announced that they will in January move forward in their joint exploration of a new professional, pan-European men’s basketball league by engaging prospective teams and ownership groups in the process to join the league.

In addition to permanent spots, the new league would offer every team in a FIBA-affiliated domestic league in Europe a merit-based pathway to qualify on an annual basis either through FIBA’s Basketball Champions League (BCL) or an end-of-season qualifying tournament.  The league would also align its schedule with domestic league and national team schedules, allowing players to represent their club and national team year-round.

As part of the new league, the NBA and FIBA would also plan to dedicate financial support and resources to the continued development of Europe’s basketball ecosystem, including domestic leagues, club team academies, and the NBA and FIBA’s existing programs to develop aspiring players, coaches and referees at all levels of the game.

“Advancing further this joint NBA-FIBA project is great news for the European basketball community,” said FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis.  “The format of the league respects European sport model principles by offering any ambitious club in the continent a fair pathway to the top.  The project is conceived in a way that will improve the sustainability of the entire European basketball ecosystem, including players, clubs, leagues and national federations, by generating a knock-on effect that will strongly benefit basketball fans throughout Europe.”

“Our conversations with various stakeholders in Europe have reinforced our belief that an enormous opportunity exists around the creation of a new league on the continent,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.  “Together with FIBA, we look forward to engaging prospective clubs and ownership groups that share our vision for the game’s potential in Europe.”

The NBA and FIBA will provide additional updates in the coming months.

Nowitzki, Bird Lead Parade of Legends into FIBA Hall of Fame

December 21, 2025

MIES (Switzerland) - On World Basketball Day, FIBA is proud to announce the Hall of Fame Class of 2026, paying tribute to legendary figures whose contributions have shaped the global game.

A total of seven players and one coach are being recognized for their stellar individual contributions to the sport.

Members of the Class of 2026 will be honored at an enshrinement ceremony on April 21 in Berlin.

Hoops icons Dirk Nowitzki of Germany and Sue Bird of USA headline the group of new inductees.

Nowitzki, the MVP of both the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2002 in Indianapolis and EuroBasket 2005 in Belgrade, represented his country in FIBA competitions for two decades. He started with the youth teams in 1995, before leading the senior team at numerous tournaments until 2015.

With the Dallas Mavericks, the 2.13m (7ft) power forward won an NBA title, competed in numerous playoffs, and claimed the NBA MVP award. He was a perennial All-Star.

Bird, a 1.75m point guard, was the heart and soul of the USA women's team that dominated international basketball from 2002 until her international retirement at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. She spearheaded the USA runs to four FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup titles and also played an integral role in five consecutive Olympic gold medal-winning teams, when the Americans won every game they played.

Nowitzki and Bird are joined in the 2026 class by Céline Dumerc, Hedo Türkoğlu, Clarisse Machanguana, Ludwik Miętta-Mikołajewicz, Wang Zhizhi, and Ismenia Pauchard.

Dumerc, France's point guard when they won the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2009, claimed runners-up spots on three other occasions in the competition and a third-place finish. The lightning quick playmaker had a reputation for hitting shots in the clutch for her national team, including at the 2012 Olympics when she sparked the team on a run that finished with a silver medal.

Türkoğlu is a legend of Türkiye who shot to prominence when his team reached the FIBA EuroBasket 2001 Final in Istanbul. In 2009, the long-time NBA star led the Orlando Magic to the NBA Finals. A year later, when the 2010 FIBA Basketball World Cup was hosted in his country, he took the 12 Giant Men to the Final and was named to the All-Star Five.

Clarisse Machanguana was a celebrated center of Mozambique. One of the most revered players in African basketball, Clarisse led her country to third place at the FIBA Women's AfroBasket in 1993 and second place in 2013. The second achievement resulted in a historical first qualification of Mozambique to the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup.

Wang Zhizhi of China claimed two FIBA Asia Cup titles, in 2001 and 2011. The explosive scorer also competed in four Olympics (1996, 2000, 2008, 2012) and two FIBA Basketball World Cups (2006, 2010). He was the first-ever Chinese to be drafted and play in the NBA.

Ludwik Miętta-Mikołajewicz of Poland was the coach of the Wisla Kraków women's team and led it to 14 domestic titles, the first in 1963 and the last in 1981. Miętta-Mikołajewicz also had the honor of coaching Poland's women's national team. He guided them to two runners-up finishes at the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket in 1980 and 1981, and led the team to the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup in 1983.

Ismenia Pauchard is a legend of the Chile women's national team and is being inducted posthumously. Pauchard was the third leading scorer at both FIBA Women's Basketball Cups in 1957 and 1964.

Here is the full list of inductees that make up the 2026 Class of the FIBA Hall of Fame:

Both the enshrinement ceremony and the draw will take place in Berlin at Kraftwerk, a former power plant that has been transformed into a striking event venue. This distinctive setting captures the city’s creative energy and vibrant urban culture.

NBA OFFICIATING PROGRAM REINSTATES ERIC LEWIS

NEW YORK, Dec. 19, 2025 – The National Basketball Association (NBA) announced today that Eric Lewis has been reinstated to the league’s officiating program as an NBA G League official.  He will begin officiating games at this weekend’s NBA G League Winter Showcase.

Lewis, who retired in August 2023 while the NBA was investigating him for potential violations of its social media policy, has spent the previous two seasons officiating NCAA men’s basketball games.  As part of a jointly agreed-upon path to a potential return, Lewis fully participated in an investigation into his social media activities during his time as an NBA official.  In order to be eligible to rejoin the program, Lewis cleared several benchmarks, including stress management counseling and training on responsible use of social media.

“Over nearly 20 years, Eric established himself as one of the NBA’s premier game officials,” said Byron Spruell, NBA President, League Operations.  “While he made a mistake in engaging on social media, our investigation concluded that his behavior did not impact his ability to officiate games fairly and with integrity.  We are confident he has learned from that experience and can properly serve the game again, first as an NBA G League official and potentially in a return as an NBA official.”

During his 19-year NBA career, Lewis officiated 1,161 regular-season games and 91 playoff games, including six NBA Finals games.  Before joining the NBA officiating staff, Lewis refereed three seasons in the NBA G League.  Prior to beginning his officiating career, Lewis played basketball at Bethune-Cookman University and Mainland High School in Daytona Beach, Fla.
