Japan complete double
at FIBA 3x3 U17 Asia Cup 2022

OCTOBER 17, 2022

KUALA LUMPUR (Malaysia) - Japan dominated with double delight as their men's and women's teams won the sixth edition of the FIBA 3x3 U17 Asia Cup, which took place inside the MABA Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on October 13-16, 2022. It marked the first time ever a country wins both categories in the same edition of this competition.

In the men's category, Japan repeated as champions - previously played at the U18 level - as the event returned after a three-year break. Unbeaten Japan cruised through to the final, but faced a tougher test against India in a thrilling final. It was bucket for bucket before Japan scored the final five points to prevail 21-17.

Young gun Eijiro Ogawa was named MVP after scoring 42 points across five games and he was joined in the team of the tournament by Harsh Dagar (India) and Temuulen Tumur, who led Mongolia to the bronze medal after a tense 21-18 win over Chinese Taipei.

On the women's side, Japan won their first U17 Asia Cup title since 2016 after silencing the home fans with a comfortable 21-7 win over Malaysia. Prodigiously talented 16-year-old Kanon Suzuki cemented her MVP with a game-high 8 points to lead Japan, who had survived a major scare in the semis against Chinese Taipei.

Suzuki, who scored 31 points in five games, was also named in the team of the tournament alongside Hui Lin (Malaysia) and Yu Lan Chang, who powered Chinese Taipei to the bronze medal with a 21-17 win over Mongolia in a reverse of the men's result.

###

Exciting, urban and innovative, 3x3 is inspired by several forms of streetball played worldwide and is considered the world’s number one urban team sport. Steered by FIBA, games see two teams of three players face off on a basketball half-court.

It was played successfully for the first time in international competition at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and since then has benefited from the launch of a yearly city-based FIBA 3x3 World Tour and national-team FIBA 3x3 World & Continental Cups.

On July 24, 2021, 3x3 made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games.

NEW YORK, Oct. 14, 2022 – The Grambling State University and Southern University men’s basketball programs have been selected to play in the NBA HBCU Classic 2023, the NBA today announced.  The Southwestern Athletic Conference matchup will take place on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 4 p.m. ET/2 p.m. MT at the University of Utah’s Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City as part of NBA All-Star 2023.  The second NBA HBCU Classic will be simulcast on TNT, ESPN2 and NBA TV.

NBA legends Bob Love (Southern alum) and Willis Reed (Grambling State alum) have been named honorary captains of the 2023 NBA HBCU Classic.  Love and Reed will represent their alma maters leading up to the game.

“My pathway from Southern to the NBA has opened countless doors for me,” said Love. “I am proud to support the NBA in using the game of basketball to celebrate the rich history of HBCUs and drive opportunity for the next generation of leaders both on and off the court.”

“I credit my career in part to my time at Grambling State,” said Reed. “The HBCU Classic will provide what is to most a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play on the NBA stage and serve as a platform for those interested in the business side of the game to gain industry insight and make lasting connections.”

The teams were selected in collaboration with the Southwestern Athletic Conference.  The NBA HBCU Classic continues the league’s ongoing, year-round commitment to advancing educational, career and economic opportunities in partnership with HBCU institutions as well as increasing support and awareness for HBCU athletics.

Earlier this year, the NBA hosted its first-ever HBCU Classic as part of NBA All-Star 2022 in Cleveland.  Classic participants Howard University and Morgan State University both received donations of $100,000 to support the student experience.  Over the course of the week, 11 HBCU students served as paid NBA interns across disciplines as part of the league’s HBCU Event Shadow program.  During NBA All-Star, more than $1 million was contributed to support the HBCU community through the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and academic institutions.  This summer, 60 students participated in the league’s inaugural NBA HBCU Fellowship program, which provides career development opportunities in the business of basketball for undergraduate and graduate students from HBCUs.  The NBA family has annually supported HBCUs through additional scholarship programs, business case competitions, mentorship, networking and internship opportunities since the NBA’s involvement in the founding of TMCF more than 35 years ago.

"We are extremely excited and honored to represent Grambling State University at the NBA HBCU Classic," said Grambling Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Trayvean Scott. "Grambling State is an iconic name brand. We knew when this opportunity was presented to us, it was the right decision to not only bring SWAC basketball to the NBA All-Star, but to continue to bring awareness and increased support to HBCU athletics."

"I am very excited for our student-athletes, fans, supporters and alumni that we will take part in the second NBA HBCU Classic during NBA All-Star,” said Southern Director of Athletics, Roman Banks. "This allows Southern University’s brand to be showcased globally and we appreciate the NBA's commitment to supporting our HBCU institutions. We are excited for everyone to see one of the great and historic rivalries between Grambling State and Southern University and to showcase the excellence and talent that has come to define student-athletes from the SWAC and HBCUs."

FIBA Women’s World Cup runners-up China jumps five spots to No. 2 in World Ranking

OCTOBER 10, 2022

MIES (Switzerland) - China jumped to second place in the FIBA World Ranking Women, presented by Nike thanks to finishing second in the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022.

China were defeated in the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup Final 83-61 by the world's top ranked team USA, who top the latest ranking with 848.8 points. By reaching the podium for the first time since 1994, losing only to the World Champion USA, China jumped five spots to second with 676.5 points. Hosts Australia finished third at home in Sydney in the flagship event of women's basketball and retained the third place spot in the ranking with 668.3 points.

Fourth place in the latest ranking now belongs to Spain, who fell two spots to 661 points as they failed to qualify for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup after taking second in 2014 and third in 2010 and 2018.

Canada finish off the top five in fifth with a one-spot drop to 648.9 points, being surpassed by China at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup.

The biggest climber in the Top 10 was Puerto Rico, who rose six spots to 10th by reaching the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup Quarter-Finals. This was arguably the biggest positive surprise of the event. In 2018, they finished 16th-placed at the World Cup held in Spain.

Bosnia and Herzegovina registered the largest rise in the top 50 as they jumped 10 spots to 14th place as they reached their first FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup - and took 12th place.

Mali also had a big rise as they moved up nine slots to 26th as they returned to the global showcase and finished 11th after having placed 15th in 2010.

Due to COVID-19, several tournaments were postponed. These include the Olympics (qualifying and final tournaments), played in 2021 rather than 2020. To ensure that these postponements have no lasting impact on the ranking and to keep the standard format of a four-year cycle, the dates of the affected matches are altered to the year that they were originally due to take place, before the time decay factor is computed.

BUCHAREST (Romania) - Poland (men) and France (women) won a thrilling FIBA 3x3 U23 World Cup 2022, which took place inside the iconic Bucharest Metropolitan Circus on October 5-9.

The men's final was an absolute game-of-the-year candidate. Down 20-15 against Serbia, Poland finished on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a cold-blooded two-pointer, courtesy of MVP Mateusz Szlachetka.

NBA 2K LEAGUE AND AUSTRALIA’S NATIONAL BASKETBALL LEAGUE ANNOUNCE LANDMARK AGREEMENT TO LAUNCH EXPANSION TEAM, NBL OZ GAMING

– NBL Becomes First Australian Professional Team to Join a Global Esports League, Third NBA 2K League Team from Outside of North America –

MELBOURNE Oct. 7, 2022 – The NBA 2K League and Australia’s National Basketball League (NBL) today announced a landmark agreement that will see the NBL launch an NBA 2K League expansion team, NBL Oz Gaming, representing Australia.  This marks the first time an Australian professional team has joined a global esports league on a permanent basis.

The NBA 2K League tipped off its inaugural season in May 2018, with 17 teams, each affiliated with an NBA team.  With the addition of NBL Oz Gaming, the NBA 2K League has now expanded to 25 teams, 22 of which are affiliated with NBA teams, including 2022 Champions Pistons GT (3v3) and Bucks Gaming (5v5).  NBL Oz Gaming becomes the third expansion team from outside of North America following the addition of the Gen.G Tigers representing Shanghai, and DUX Infinitos representing Mexico City, in 2021 and 2022, respectively, and will make its debut when the NBA 2K League’s sixth season tips off in spring 2023.  Together, the NBL and the NBA 2K League will collaborate to grow the NBA 2K League’s presence in Australia through talent identification, joint marketing efforts and grassroots events.  NBL Oz Gaming will be based in the U.S. during the 2023 season, with the team’s location still to be announced.

“This is another historic day as we welcome Australia’s premier basketball league to the NBA 2K League family,” said NBA 2K League President Brendan Donohue.  “The NBL has a demonstrated track record of not only transforming their league, but also growing a fanbase in new and creative ways.  The NBL is the ideal partner to help the NBA 2K League do the same in Australia, where basketball and 2K are incredibly popular and we’re thrilled that NBL Oz Gaming will represent Australia in the NBA 2K League for years to come.”

“We have been intrigued by the esports sector now for some time, largely because there is a significant crossover between gaming fans and basketball fans – more so than any other sport,” NBL Commissioner Jeremy Loeliger said. “We always want to partner with the best, and one of the best professional esports leagues in the world is operated by our long-standing friends and partners at the NBA.  The global popularity of NBA 2K and the NBA 2K League continue to grow every year, and neither is showing any signs of slowing down.  Our hopes and expectations are that NBL Oz Gaming will introduce the NBL to a legion of new fans around the world.  But first, we have to turn our attention to building a strong and competitive roster and showing once again that the NBL can take on the best in the world.  This time, it just happens to be a slightly different game!”

The 2023 NBA 2K League season will livestream in Australia on Twitch and YouTube.  Over the NBA 2K League’s first five seasons, the league has conducted international qualifying events in Hong Kong, Seoul, and remotely for top players from the Asia-Pacific region.  Jack “Jaacko” Stevenson (New Zealand) was selected 50th overall in the 2019 NBA 2K League Draft and Meason “xMiLo---” Camille (Australia) was selected 62nd overall in the 2021 NBA 2K League Draft.

NBA 2K22 was in the Top-3 best-selling console games in Australia (#3) and New Zealand (#2) in 2021*.

The NBL has established itself as Australia’s fastest growing sports league and one of top basketball leagues in the world outside of the NBA.  Over the past few seasons, the league has seen record attendance, broadcast audiences and social media engagement, and has become a destination for top players from around the world, most notably through the NBL Next Stars program.  Through the growth of the NBL, the success of Australia’s national teams and the impact that Australian players are having in top basketball leagues around the world, basketball is now the fastest-growing sport in Australia.

NBL Oz Gaming will participate in the NBA 2K League Expansion Draft on Saturday, Nov. 5 (Eastern Time).
