NBA, MLB, AND NHL LAUNCH NEW RESPONSIBLE GAMING CAMPAIGN “NEVER KNOW WHAT’S NEXT”

- New Spot Emphasizes Importance of Responsible Gaming and Encourages Fans to Set Limits -

- Three Pro Sports Leagues Create Spot in Collaboration with DraftKings, ESPN BET, Fanatics Sportsbook, FanDuel and National Council on Problem Gambling -

NEW YORK, Nov. 21, 2023 – The National Basketball Association (NBA), Major League Baseball (MLB) and the National Hockey League (NHL) today announced the release of “Never Know What’s Next,” a 30-second spot that encourages responsible betting in sports.  The spot, with support from sportsbook operators DraftKings, Fanatics Sportsbook, FanDuel, PENN Entertainment, operator of ESPN BET, and the National Council on Problem Gambling reminds fans who bet to do so responsibly and always set a limit.  “Never Know What’s Next” premieres on linear on Nov. 21 during the NBA’s In-Season Tournament Cleveland Cavaliers vs Philadelphia 76ers game on TNT at 7:30 p.m. ET and on @NBA, @MLB and @NHL social platforms.  You can watch “Never Know What’s Next” here.

At the heart of this campaign is an educational message reminding bettors that betting is a form of entertainment and should be done so responsibly.  This campaign seeks to inform bettors, with the critical message that there are no “locks” and no “easy money” in sports betting.  The spot features live game action from the NBA, MLB, and NHL to demonstrate the inherent unpredictability of sports.  Whether it’s a game winning shot from beyond half court, a game changing save on the ice or a walk-off home run, the campaign reminds fans that every play, every shot, every swing is unpredictable.  The campaign directs fans to https://responsibleplay.org/, the National Council on Problem Gambling’s digital destination that provides resources for fans to learn more about responsible gaming.  The three leagues have taken a multifaceted approach to legal sports betting and continue to communicate responsible gaming messages to fans.

“Working with our fellow sports leagues, gaming operator partners, and responsible gaming partners gives added weight – particularly for young bettors – to this shared priority of making an impact on responsible gaming education across the United States,” said Scott Kaufman-Ross, NBA Senior Vice President Head of Gaming & New Business Ventures.  “Ensuring fans are aware of the inherent risk if they choose to bet and correcting the misconception that betting on sports is a good way to make money are integral to the NBA’s approach to legal sports betting.”

“We’re incredibly proud to be a part of this important campaign alongside the NBA, NHL and our operator partners,” said Casey Brett, MLB Senior Vice President, Business Development.  “It’s paramount that when our fans bet, they know how to do so responsibly – and this initiative is just one small but important part of our continued commitment to ensuring sports betting stays safe for all who choose to wager.”

“This campaign continues our ongoing commitment to educating fans about the importance of responsible betting,” said Keith Wachtel, NHL Chief Business Officer.  “With more fans than ever having the opportunity to legally bet in their home states, it is imperative that we work with our media and sportsbook partners, as well as with our friends at the NBA and MLB, to inform and emphasize the risks and encourage the importance of setting limits and betting responsibly, especially among our growing fanbase in the younger demographic.”

“We’re excited to bring these two storied programs and conference rivals together to compete in our third HBCU Classic as part of NBA All-Star 2024,” said NBA Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer Mark Tatum.  “The level of competition during the previous two Classic games set a high standard and showcased the tremendous pride of the HBCU community.  We look forward to celebrating Virginia Union University and Winston-Salem State University on one of the NBA’s marquee stages.”

The teams were selected in collaboration with the CIAA.  The 2024 NBA HBCU Classic presented by AT&T continues the league’s ongoing, year-round commitment to advancing educational, career and economic opportunities in partnership with HBCU institutions as well as increasing support and awareness for HBCU athletics.

“We are thrilled the CIAA will be represented during this year's NBA All-Star weekend,” said CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams Parker.  “This is an amazing opportunity to give expanded exposure for our DII student-athletes, our member institutions and the HBCU Community.  We look forward to bringing the talent, culture, and excellence of the CIAA to the grandest stage of the game.”

“We are very excited about the invitation to participate in the 2024 NBA HBCU Classic.  Virginia Union University and Winston-Salem State University boast strong winning traditions and have produced multiple NBA players and Hall of Famers,” said Virginia Union University Vice President for intercollegiate athletics Joseph Taylor.  “This opportunity given by the NBA truly strengthens both the school’s brand and also highlights our HBCU culture.  Virginia Union Athletics thanks the NBA for this opportunity to highlight and showcase our student-athletes and performers.”

“Thank you to the CIAA and the NBA for selecting the WSSU Men’s Basketball team under the leadership of Cleo Hill Jr. to represent the Southern Division of the CIAA in this prestigious event,” said Winston-Salem State University Athletic Director Etienne Thomas.  “This opportunity provides visibility for our student-athletes to showcase their athletic ability on the biggest stage available to professional athletes, which many of them aspire to be in the future, while also celebrating who they are as Division II student-athletes achieving academic and championship success, as we prepare them to graduate as champions and depart WSSU to serve their communities.  We have a legacy and tradition of excellence and championships at WSSU with a program that includes the Legendary CE “Big House” Gaines, Earl “The Pearl” Monroe, Cleo Hill Sr, and many others who laid the Championship foundation for our current student-athletes to follow.  We look forward to painting the City Red with our Championship team, world-renowned Powerhouse Cheerleaders, and the #1 ESPN College band-the Red Sea of Sound (RSOS)."

Earlier this year, during NBA All-Star 2023 in Utah, HBCU programming included the HBCU Event Intern Program, where 13 students served as paid interns across different NBA disciplines to gain experience working in sports and learn from NBA staff.  The students also participated in several other career development events and opportunities.  Additionally, over the summer, 74 students participated in the NBA HBCU Fellowship program, which provides career development opportunities in the business of basketball for undergraduate and graduate students from HBCUs.  The NBA family annually supports HBCUs through additional scholarships, programs, business case competitions, mentorship, networking and more through support of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and academic institutions.  The Feb. 17 match-up between Virginia Union and Winston-Salem State will feature an afternoon of competitive on-court action and band performances celebrating HBCU pride.  Additional programming to support HBCUs at All-Star 2024 will be announced at a later date.

NBA ALL-STAR HISTORY IN THE BAY AREA

NBA All-Star 2025 will mark the 25th anniversary of the last time that the event was held in the Bay Area.  In the 2000 NBA All-Star Game, the San Antonio Spurs’ Tim Duncan (24 points and 14 rebounds) and the Los Angeles Lakers’ Shaquille O’Neal (22 points and nine rebounds) shared Most Valuable Player honors and led the Western Conference past the Eastern Conference 137-126 at The Arena in Oakland.  The Philadelphia 76ers’ Allen Iverson, making his All-Star Game debut, scored a game-high 26 points for the Eastern Conference.

NBA All-Star 2000 also featured an iconic performance by the Toronto Raptors’ Vince Carter to win the AT&T Slam Dunk.  Carter, then in the second season of an NBA-record 22-season career, scored a perfect 50 on three of his five dunks and received scores of 49 and 48 on his other two attempts.

The first NBA All-Star Game in the Bay Area took place in 1967 at the Cow Palace.  The host team’s players shined as the San Francisco Warriors’ Rick Barry earned the MVP award with 38 points and Warriors teammate Nate Thurmond had 16 points and 18 rebounds to help the Western Conference defeat the Eastern Conference 135-120.

Thirteen members of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team played in the 1967 NBA All-Star Game: Barry, Thurmond, Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain, Dave DeBusschere, Hal Greer, John Havlicek, Jerry Lucas, Willis Reed, Oscar Robertson, Bill Russell, Jerry West and Lenny Wilkens.

In-Season Tournament Song Features Mashup of LL COOL J and The Roots Respective Classic Hits “Mama Said Knock You Out” and “Here I Come”

NEW YORK, Nov. 3, 2023 – The National Basketball Association (NBA) today announced that LL COOL J, Grammy Award-winning hip-hop icon, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, actor, author and Founder and CEO of Rock The Bells, has collaborated with four-time Grammy Award-winning hip-hop act The Roots to reimagine the legendary song “Mama Said Knock You Out,” which will serve as the official anthem for the inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament.

The anthem, a bespoke reprise of LL COOL J’s Grammy® Award-winning single, “Mama Said Knock You Out,” features the familiar hook from The Roots’ popular track “Here I Come.”  The reimagined version combines the iconic lyrics of the 1991 hit “Mama Said You Knock You Out” with the energetic melody of “Here I Come.” It will serve as the musical backdrop for the stages of the In-Season Tournament, starting with Group Play involving all 30 teams and progressing through the single-elimination Knockout Rounds, culminating in the Championship.

The spot pays homage to the classic VMA Award-winning music video while infusing it with a modern twist. It transforms LL COOL J’s presence from the boxing ring to the hardwood In-Season Tournament stage. This stage includes a tribute to the tournament’s coveted trophy, the NBA Cup, and features a live performance by The Roots.

“I’ve been a fan of the NBA ever since I can remember, and it’s a real honor to have my record serving as the anthem for this monumental moment,” said LL COOL J. “I’m excited to see the energy of the song translate to the play on the court during the NBA In-Season Tournament.”
