Tom Lawlor returns to MLW, challenges Alex Kane for World Title this Saturday in Philly

Davey Boy Smith Jr. placed on injured reserved list

Tickets Now Available at MLW2300.com

Major League Wrestling (MLW®) today announced a new main event of “Filthy” Tom Lawlor vs. Alex Kane (Champion) for the World Heavyweight Championship at MLW Slaughterhouse live and exclusively on FITE+ this Saturday, October 14 at Philadelphia’s 2300 Arena.

🎟 Grab tickets at MLW2300.com and the 2300 Arena box office. Tickets start at $15.

72 hours out from Slaughterhouse, the World Heavyweight Title Fight has changed.

The original challenger, Davey Boy Smith Jr., has withdrawn from the bout and has been placed on the emergency injured reserved list.

With DBS out, league officials conferred with Don King, promoter of the Bomaye Fight Club and World Champion Alex Kane, through the night and early morning hours on the status of a title fight this Saturday.

Kane, vowing he fights for the people, insisted on giving fans a title fight this weekend, which set the stage for a shocking return to the league: “Filthy” Tom Lawlor.

“Tom is a great guy, but he was PISSED at what Kane said about him during that MLW media event a few weeks back,” said MLW CEO Court Bauer. “Getting a cage fighter mad isn’t something I’d recommend Kane do again. (Tom) has been dying to get a fight with Kane and so when the spot opened up, he was the first call we made. I want to also acknowledge and thank New Japan Pro Wrestling for aiding in facilitating this. They came through in the clutch.”

Making claims and allegations that was Lawlor was ducking him, Tom didn’t hesitate to take the title fight, which was fast-tracked to contract signatures by MLW and New Japan this morning.

Lawlor, the first fighter to win the Battle Riot (2018), 2020 Opera Cup winner and a former MLW World Heavyweight Champion enjoyed an extraordinary 4-year stint in Major League Wrestling. Since exiting in 2021, Lawlor has been a force in New Japan Pro Wrestling, becoming the inaugural NJPW Strong Openweight Champion.

Tom Lawlor now returns to MLW, starting a new “filthy” chapter… but will it start with a new title reign? It goes down at Slaughterhouse LIVE and exclusively on FITE+. Sign up for your FITE+ subscription now.

“Hot Sauce” Tracy Williams has been in intense training at the Catchpoint training center in Philadelphia readying for his next fight in MLW.

The match is a part of the FUSION portion of the card.

Standing in his way is the debuting 23-year-old Griffin McCoy. Despite his young age, McCoy is a 7-year veteran, debuting in 2016. Impressing league scouts, the 6’2” San Franciscan has a vicious arsenal of suplexes and strikes.

MLW / CMLL / NJPW UNITE FOR LANDMARK STRATEGIC ALLIANCE

(NEW YORK / MEXICO / TOKYO) -- Major League Wrestling (“MLW”), Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (“CMLL”) and New Japan Pro-Wrestling (“NJPW”) today announced the formation of a landmark strategic alliance.

The three world class organizations will unite for a variety of crossover collaborations, commencing this October.  The strategic alliance creates the ultimate stage for each organization to showcase their signature fighting styles and athletes.

“It’s a privilege and honor to forge an alliance with CMLL and work with Mr. Salvador Lutteroth Lomeli and his team while expanding MLW’s relationship with New Japan to create an extraordinary collaboration,” said MLW CEO and Founder Court Bauer. “I wish to thank Mr. Salvador Lutteroth Lomeli, Mr. Naoki Sugabayashi, Mr. Takami Ohbari and Rocky Romero for building the foundation for this opportunity. We look forward to showcasing the extraordinary athletes from Mexico, Japan, and America for fans worldwide.”

Celebrating its 90th anniversary earlier this month, CMLL is recognized as the premier lucha libre organization in the world. Introducing lucha libre to Mexico on September 21, 1933, CMLL, originally known as EMLL, is a sports and cultural institution, with the famous Arena Mexico hosting some of Mexico’s most iconic matches and becoming the unrivaled leader in lucha libre. Recognized for its rich tradition and celebrated for its unmatched excellence, CMLL is synonymous with lucha libre in Mexico and around the world.

Founded January 13, 1972, New Japan Pro-Wrestling is the largest and longest-running professional wrestling promotion in Japan. Defining the term fighting spirit, NJPW is heralded as the King of Sports. Promoting marquee events, such as Wrestle Kingdom and the brilliant G1 CLIMAX tournament, NJPW is the gold standard. In 2009, NJPW and CMLL formed an alliance highlighted by the crossover of each roster as well as touring events.  In 2019, NJPW established its US based subsidiary, New Japan Pro-Wrestling of America. NJPW is acknowledged for its growing footprint as a preeminent wrestling promotion around the world.

Major League Wrestling debuted June 15, 2002, presenting a variety of wrestling styles in its matches. MLW is recognized for featuring some of the sport’s most storied wrestling families, today’s top ranked wrestlers and the next generation of world class fighters.
