We’re truly grateful to the players who make our jobs more enjoyable and our stories more illuminating.” More than four dozen players were nominated by PBWA members. Twenty-five finalists were selected by a PBWA subcommittee to create the official ballot, which was voted on by the entire membership. Players received two points for every first-team vote and one point for every second-team vote. The other 15 finalists, in alphabetical order, were: Paolo Banchero (Orlando Magic), Cade Cunningham (Detroit Pistons), DeMar DeRozan (Sacramento Kings), Donte DiVincenzo (Minnesota Timberwolves), Anthony Edwards (Minnesota Timberwolves), Rudy Gobert (Minnesota Timberwolves), Al Horford (Boston Celtics), Kyrie Irving (Dallas Mavericks), C.J. BOSTON CELTICS’ JRUE HOLIDAY NAMED 2024-25 NBA SOCIAL JUSTICE CHAMPION AND WILL RECEIVE THE KAREEM ABDUL-JABBAR TROPHY – NBA to Donate $100,000 to the Jrue and Lauren Holiday (JLH) Social Impact Fund – NEW YORK, May 7, 2025 – The NBA today announced that Boston Celtics guard Jrue Holiday has been named the 2024-25 NBA Social Justice Champion and will receive the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Trophy. The NBA will also donate $100,000 to the Jrue and Lauren Holiday Social Impact Fund (JLH Fund). Holiday was selected from a group of five finalists for pursuing social justice and advancing Abdul-Jabbar’s life mission to engage, empower and drive equality for individuals and groups who have been historically disadvantaged. Since its inception, the JLH Fund has distributed over $5.3 million in grants and delivered more than 400 hours of coaching and support to nearly 200 businesses across the U.S. The JLH Fund was established after Holiday pledged the remainder of his 2020 NBA salary—$5 million—to combat systemic racism and economic injustice. Most recently, the JLH Fund mobilized resources to support families affected by the 2025 Los Angeles wildfires. Holiday also serves on the board of the National Basketball Social Justice Coalition, working with fellow players, team governors, coaches, and NBA leadership to advance policy and advocacy efforts around criminal justice reform, community safety and voting access. Through the JLH Fund, Holiday and his wife, Lauren, launched the Boston Creator Incubator + Accelerator in partnership with Boston Xchange (founded by Celtics teammate Jaylen Brown). This initiative supports Boston-based creators and entrepreneurs from underrepresented communities by providing up to $100,000 in grant capital per business, along with elite coaching and access to top institutions like MIT, Harvard, and Suffolk University. The Incubator empowers founders to prototype, produce, and publicly launch their ventures while being supported by a powerful ecosystem of advisors, investors, and champions. The effort reflects Holiday’s broader mission to drive economic empowerment through catalytic philanthropy and creative capital deployment. “Since entering the league, Jrue Holiday has dedicated himself to helping others in their times of greatest need and pursuing a more just society for all,” said NBA Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer Mark Tatum. “The selflessness that defines his game is even more evident in the work he and his wife Lauren do off the floor to create more opportunities for a generation of youth who might have otherwise been overlooked.” Finalists for the award included Bam Adebayo (Miami HEAT), Harrison Barnes (San Antonio Spurs), Chris Boucher (Toronto Raptors) and CJ McCollum (New Orleans Pelicans). Holiday’s selection as the NBA Social Justice Champion was determined by a selection committee led by NBA Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer Mark Tatum, and comprised of social justice leaders including NBA Legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, human rights activist Dr. Richard Lapchick, National Urban League President and CEO Marc Morial, UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía. JJ Mandaquit from the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Court of Leaders served as the youth representative for the second consecutive year. This month, Holiday was also named the winner of the 2024-25 NBA Sportsmanship award for the second time and received the Joe Dumars Trophy. His previous win was during the 2020-21 season. The NBA Sportsmanship Award honors a player who best represents the ideals of sportsmanship on the court and is voted on by current NBA players. Previous Social Justice Champion award winners include Carmelo Anthony, Reggie Bullock, Stephen Curry and Karl-Anthony Towns.
Indonesia to host FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup 2028 and FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2029 |
|
MAY 7, 2025 MIES (Switzerland) – FIBA has awarded Indonesia hosting rights for the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup 2028 and the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2029.
It will be the first time in history that an edition of each showpiece competition will be held in Asia, bringing even more excitement and anticipation to the events.
The decision comes off the back of the country having been proud co-hosts of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 and was officially announced during a special visit to Jakarta this week by a FIBA delegation, which included FIBA Treasurer Ingo Weiss and FIBA COO Patrick Mariller.
The delegation met with the President of the Indonesian Basketball Association (PERBASI), Budi Djiwandono; Secretary General of PERBASI, Nirmala Dewi; Minister of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Indonesia, Dito Ariotedjo; FIBA Central Board Member and Minister of State Owned-Enterprises of the Republic of Indonesia, Erick Thohir; and the Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee of Indonesia, Wijaya Noeradi.
Widely heralded as the biggest FIBA event in history, the appetite and passion for the sport in Indonesia shone through and was a significant factor in the runaway success of the 2023 tournament.
|
|
Now fans in Indonesia can look forward to welcoming the stars of the future. Both competitions provide the perfect platform for the cream of rising star talent from around the globe to showcase their skills.
The awarding of the hosting rights also builds on the enormous capacity for the continued growth and elevation of basketball in the country.
This was emphatically highlighted with the opening of a FIBA office in Indonesia last year, an essential step in developing and unlocking the huge potential of the sport. It is already playing a vital role in supporting basketball development at all levels, focusing on grassroots programs and empowering the local basketball community.
The confirmed U17 and U19 events in Indonesia continues the multi-year hosting model, introduced by FIBA in 2019. Encouraging National Federations to host consecutive Youth World Cups, it was put in place to maximize synergies and better organize and manage events - while also allowing National Federations to showcase their event-hosting capabilities on the global stage.
The decision also extends the confirmed list of destinations for FIBA's flagship youth competitions, with the hosts having already been confirmed for 2025 and 2026.
A decision on the hosting rights for the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2028 and FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup 2029 will be made in due course.

MAY 6

The announcement was made during a press conference in Warsaw, with FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis, PZKosz President Grzegorz Bachański, and city representatives in attendance.

Miami win FIBA 3x3 World Tour Utsunomiya Opener 2025 |
|
APRIL 27, 2025 UTSUNOMIYA (Japan) - Miami (USA) repeat their Utsunomiya heroics, defeating Amsterdam Rabobank (NED) 21 - 17 to win the FIBA 3x3 World Tour Utsunomiya Opener 2025 on April 27.
The American side shine in the Japanese city yet again, going unbeaten on their way to the final. Though sporting a new-look compared to last season, Miami took no time in finding form, finding offense output collectively. Mitch Hahn and James Parrott were key in their qualification games, but huge contributions from Henry Caruso and Dylan Travis took them all the way to the final.
They would face reigning champs Amsterdam Rabobank who maintained their winning ways as well, catching fire and going unbeaten all the way to the final matchup.
A back-and-forth battle ensued between two of the premier teams in the circuit, with Miami utilising their flowing offense to notch early points while the Reigning champs worked in the paint to answer back. It turned out to be a physical matchup throughout with neither team allowing the other to find rhythm.
Dutchman Jan Driessen and Worthy de Jong pulled the offensive duties for their side, attempting to hold on to Miami who took the lead thanks to big outside shots from Dylan Travis and Mitch Hahn. With scores at 14 - 10 to the American side with under 4 minutes to go, the Dutch responded with a timely two from Maarten Bouwknecht to halve the deficit. Travis however, would cap off a scorching game with back-to-back twos to put the game firmly in their grasp.
Hahn would deliver the final blow with a huge two to make it an 20 - 15 advantage with seconds left. Amsterdam’s late bucket would be simply consolation as Dylan Travis would call game on the free throw line, a 21 - 17 victory for the Americans to repeat the W in Utsunomiya.
Mitch Hahn was immense as always for Miami, notching a team-high 30 points throughout the tournament. His aggression on both ends of the floor proved to be pivotal in their success in Utsunomiya as he would take home the MVP award.
In the individual contests, Hugo Suhard (Toulouse, FRA) won the Wilson Shoot-Out Contest while Dengxing "Dunk King" Chen won the Ashikaga bank dunk contest.

Bickerstaff, Detroit Pistons; Mark Daigneault, Oklahoma City Thunder; Michael Malone, Denver Nuggets; and Ime Udoka, Houston Rockets. “Kenny Atkinson has long been respected by his peers as an innovative and humble servant to the game,” said Indiana Pacers Head Coach and NBCA President Rick Carlisle. “Congratulations to Kenny on a historic season along with this prestigious recognition by his peers.” Coach Atkinson, in his first season as Head Coach of the Cavaliers, led the team to the best record in the Eastern Conference and the second-best record overall in the NBA. The Cavaliers captured their first 60+ win season since the 2009-2010 campaign and set a new franchise record with 30 road wins. The Atkinson-led Cavs finished with an overall record of 64-18, a 16-game improvement from last season and the team’s second-best mark in franchise history. Atkinson is also the first Head Coach in NBA history to take a new franchise to an undefeated record in their first 15 games. The Cavaliers had three of the four longest win streaks in the NBA this year (16, 15, and 12), making them only the second team in NBA history to have three separate 12-game winning streaks in one season (Dallas Mavericks, 2006-2007). Coach Atkinson and the Cavaliers coaching staff were twice awarded the Eastern Conference Coach of the Month Award (October/November and December) and were selected as the coaching staff to represent the Eastern Conference in the 2025 All-Star Game. Coach Atkinson has quickly transformed the Cavaliers into one of the most prolific offenses in the NBA. The Cavaliers led the league in offensive rating at 121.0 and were the only team to finish top two in both field goal percentage and three-point percentage. In addition, the Cavaliers ranked top three in numerous statistical categories, including: - First in points per game (121.9)
- First in offensive rating (121.0)
- First in effective field goal percentage (57.8)
- First in true shooting percentage (60.7)
- Second in field goal percentage (49.1)
- Second in three-point field goal percentage (38.3)
- Second in three-point field goals made per game (15.9)
- Second in points per game differential (9.5)
- Third in net rating (9.2)
“Coaching the game of basketball has been an amazing journey for me and my family, and to be recognized by my peers for a job well done this season is extremely humbling,” said Cleveland Cavaliers Head Coach Kenny Atkinson. “I’ve had the pleasure of coaching some amazing players over my career and I would not be in this position without their commitment and sacrifice for the greater good of themselves and the Cleveland Cavaliers.” “I’m also grateful to our assistant coaches and support staff, whose tireless work ethic allows me to coach to my highest potential. Individual accolades are special, but I must give a ton of credit to Koby Altman for assembling the collection of talent we have in Cleveland. A special thank you as well to Dan Gilbert for consistently providing incredible resources and assistance in our chase for NBA Championships.” “Kenny Atkinson is extremely deserving of this award and the recognition from his fellow head coaches,” said David Fogel, NBCA Executive Director and General Counsel. “Coach Atkinson’s hard work, dedication to his players, and ability to empower, led the Cavs to one of the greatest regular seasons by a coach in their first season with a new team. Congratulations to Coach Atkinson, the Cavaliers Assistant Coaches, and the entire organization on winning the Michael H. Goldberg NBCA Coach of the Year Award.” In 1980, just four years after the NBCA was founded, Goldberg became its first Executive Director. He guided the organization during the years of the greatest growth in professional basketball. He helped gain significant benefits for NBA Coaches, including increased retirement funds, salary levels, and disability insurance.
