NANCY LIEBERMAN NAMED RECIPIENT OF 2026 ICE CUBE IMPACT AWARD - Lieberman to be Honored during Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame’s Enshrinement Weekend -
SPRINGFIELD, MASS. (May 21, 2026) - The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and ground-breaking rap star, renowned blockbuster film producer and actor, entrepreneur, and co-founder of the BIG3 basketball league, Ice Cube, have announced that Nancy Lieberman, a Class of 1996 Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer, TV analyst, BIG3 coach, and philanthropist, will be honored with the 2026 Ice Cube Impact Award.
“I’m deeply honored to receive the Ice Cube Impact Award because of the man whose name is on it. Cube has given his life to changing the lives of people around the world, and I have always admired people who were the giver, not the taker,” said two-time Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman. "This award means that the work I've done in communities throughout my career has been seen, and that it is truly life-changing for the kids involved. From sending high school students to college to building Dream Courts all over the country, we are giving children the chance to see a different dream and imagine a different life for themselves."
Lieberman’s impact on the game extends well beyond her monumental playing and coaching careers. Her philanthropic efforts through Nancy Lieberman Charities have spanned decades, focusing on providing youth in underserved communities with access to sports, education, and life skills. In 2010, she launched the Dream Courts initiative, building and refurbishing basketball courts in low-income neighborhoods across the country, providing kids with safe places to play. Her efforts are deeply rooted in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, partnering with local organizations to serve at-risk youth through camps and clinics, teaching basketball fundamentals alongside leadership and character development.
She has also been one of the most vocal and visible advocates for equity in basketball, pushing for women to have a seat at the table in coaching, front offices, and leadership long before it was fashionable to do so.
“Nancy Lieberman has meant a lot to this league and to this game,” said Ice Cube. “She's one of only two women to ever head coach in men’s professional basketball — both right here in the BIG3 — and she's carried that responsibility with class every step of the way. Long before she joined us, she was a Hall of Famer building Dream Courts, running camps and clinics, and giving kids in underserved communities a real shot at something. She's been pushing for equity in basketball for a long time, quietly doing the work. We're proud to honor her with the 2026 Ice Cube Impact Award. She's earned it. Lady Magic definitely makes an impact.”
The Ice Cube Impact Award was created in 2024 to recognize individuals making substantial contributions to their communities through basketball. As the eponymous recipient, Ice Cube was honored with the inaugural award for his creation of the BIG3 basketball league alongside Jeff Kwatinetz in 2017, the premier global platform for professional 3-on-3 basketball. In 2025, the award was presented to Jalen Rose, recognizing his longtime commitment to education and community development in his hometown of Detroit. The Ice Cube Impact Award is permanently housed in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame's museum and recognizes honorees through a dedicated exhibit and in-depth storytelling.
“We are proud to once again come together with Ice Cube to honor people who represent basketball excellence on and off the court,” said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. “Nancy Lieberman is one of the most consequential figures in the history of this game. Through her charities, her Dream Courts, and her decades of work with young people in underserved communities, Nancy has used basketball exactly the way it was meant to be used, as a vehicle for opportunity and change. She is exactly what the Ice Cube Impact Award was created to recognize, and we couldn't be prouder to see her receive it."
The Ice Cube Impact Award will be presented to Nancy Lieberman at the Tip-Off Celebration and Awards Gala during Enshrinement Weekend festivities on Friday, August 14, at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Having coached in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off last season, I was impressed with the arena and the first-class event that the Hall of Fame put together. I know Friar fans enjoy going to Mohegan Sun, and I am sure they will be looking forward to this matchup.” Bryan Hodgson | Providence
“We are looking forward to participating in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off. The matchup against Providence in this environment provides our program an early opportunity to test ourselves against a very good BIG EAST opponent. It is a quality environment for the team and the fans. We'll be facing a solid team in Monmouth, which reached the finals of the CAA Championship last season. NBPA ANNOUNCES FINDINGS FROM 2025-26 REFEREE PLAYER SURVEY –Jaylen Brown, Grant Williams, Andre Iguodala, and David Kelly address the state of officiating and other topics in second episode of ‘State of the Game’ with Kenny Beecham and Enjoy Basketball – NEW YORK, May 13, 2026 — The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) today announced the findings of its annual Referee Player Survey. The results, which were delivered to the NBA league office in March 2026, served as the official player recommendations for referee assignments for the 2026 NBA Playoffs and should be a guide for the 2026 NBA Finals' selections. The survey data and feedback taken from 411 players across all 30 teams shows that players have a distinct preference for referees who offer a combination of call accuracy, experience, and a balanced temperament. Player feedback also showed that consistency and communication played a key role in rapport building and favorability among players. Based on a 1–5 rating scale, officials have been grouped into three tiers: Tier 1 (Elite & Top Performers), Tier 2 (Solid Performers), and Tier 3 (Needs Improvement). The NBPA recommends that only Tier 1 or Tier 2 referees be assigned to playoff games, with Tier 1 officials exclusively handling the NBA Finals. By putting the highest-ranked referees on the floor, the league can make sure the spotlight stays on the players and the competition instead of officiating or tense interactions with referees. | | Tier 1: Elite & Top Performers | Ray Acosta, Brent Barnaky, Curtis Blair, Tony Brothers, Nick Buchert, John Butler, James Capers, Kevin Cutler, Eric Dalen, Marc Davis, JB DeRosa, Mitchell Ervin, Jacyn Goble, Nate Green, Bill Kennedy, Courtney Kirkland, Karl Lane, Mark Lindsay, Tre Maddox, Ed Malloy, Phenizee Ransom, Dedric Taylor, Josh Tiven, James Williams, Sean Wright, Zach Zarba | | Brandon Adair, Derrick Collins, Sean Corbin, Mousa Dagher, Brian Forte, Scott Foster, Pat Fraher, Jason Goldenberg, David Guthrie, Matt Kallio, Marat Kogut, Sha'Rae Mitchell, Ashley Moyer-Gleich, Matt Myers, Andy Nagy, Brett Nansel, JT Orr, Gediminas Petraitis, JD Ralls, Kevin Scott, Aaron Smith, Jonathan Sterling, Ben Taylor, Scott Twardoski, Justin Van Duyne, CJ Washington, Leon Wood | Tier 3: Needs Improvement | Dannica Baroody, John Conley, Che Flores, Tyler Ford, John Goble, Robert Hussey, Intae Hwang, Simone Jelks, Biniam Maru, Suyash Mehta, Rodney Mott, Pat O'Connell, Jenna Reneau, Tyler Ricks, Natalie Sago, Jenna Schroeder, Brandon Schwab, Danielle Scott, Evan Scott, Michael Smith |
The 2025-26 NBPA Referee Player Survey collected data from all 30 NBA teams, rating the overall performance of all 73 referees on a scale of 1-5. Names listed in alphabetical order. “I think officiating comes down to the person. I don’t think you can reform the calls themselves—people are human and they’re going to make mistakes,” said NBPA First Vice President Grant Williams at the State of the Game roundtable. “But the best officials in the league, according to the players, are the great communicators; the ones who understand when they’ve made a mistake. As long as you’re calling a game consistently, guys are willing to adapt. It’s about having control of the game while also respecting the players and their different personalities.” You can watch NBPA Vice President Jaylen Brown and NBPA First Vice President Grant Williams, alongside NBPA Executive Director Andre Iguodala and incoming Executive Director David Kelly, discussing officiating and other key basketball topics in episode two of "State of the Game" with Kenny Beecham and Enjoy Basketball. Click here for episode one featuring NBPA President Fred VanVleet, Head of Elite Youth & Basketball Activation Shaun Livingston, Iguodala, and Kelly. Additional survey highlights include: Individual Spotlights: Zach Zarba was ranked as the No. 1 referee in the NBA. Zarba is the only official ranked by players in the Top 12 by every single team in the league. Joining him in the "Elite" category is Kevin Cutler, who was ranked No.1 by six different teams.
Behind the Numbers: Scott Foster is one of the league’s most polarizing officials with the highest standard deviation in the dataset. Although ranked as the top official by one team, combined feedback from all 30 teams placed him in the second tier. Ashley Moyer-Gleich and Sha’Rae Mitchell both received positive feedback from the players regarding improvement in their overall performance, which landed them in the second tier.

APRIL 22, 2026 BERLIN (Germany) - The FIBA Central Board has assigned the hosting rights of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2030 to Japan, and the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2031 hosting rights to France, following the conclusion of a thorough assessment of their bids on Wednesday in Berlin, Germany.
The Japanese capital, Tokyo, will host the 2030 tournament from November 26 to December 8. Three French cities - Lille, Lyon and Paris - will play host to the World Cup from August 29 to September 14, 2031, with the Final Phase to be played in Paris.
In addition to their long-held status as favorite destinations for fans worldwide, Japan and France are both elite organizers of global scale events, having hosted the two most recent summer Olympic Games, in 2020 and 2024 respectively. Japan women and France men both won silver medals at their home Olympics.
"The FIBA World Cups have become synonymous with success in large part because selecting the appropriate host each time is the cornerstone of our mission to make basketball the most popular sports community," commented FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis. |
|
"The FIBA Central Board decided that the bids by both the Japanese Basketball Association (JBA) and the French Basketball Federation (FFBB) meet the high requirements we have from a FIBA World Cup host, and has entrusted them with this big responsibility.
“Japan and France are two basketball-loving nations, two destinations extremely popular with our fans, players and partners. But what makes us more excited for both 2030 and 2031 is that really rare quality that Japan and France possess, of adding their local, unique touch of excellence and flavor to make the events truly unforgettable in time.”
Japan has previously hosted the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2006 and one group of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 in Okinawa, but this first time hosting the Women’s World Cup carries special significance as it will coincide with the 100-year anniversary of the Japanese Basketball Association (JBA)..
France will host a FIBA World Cup for the first time but the nation has a long tradition as the stage of big FIBA events. In just recent years, Lille played host to the FIBA EuroBasket 2015, Bourges hosted the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament 2020, Strasbourg was one of the two co-hosts of FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2021, and one of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournaments took place in Lyon-Villeurbanne. The first-hand personal accounts in “The World on Our Shoulders” gave viewers the sensation of experiencing the key moments of the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cups, from its first editions in the 1950s to the present day.
“This documentary is indeed a historical film, but it is by no means intended to be melancholic,” said the film’s scriptwriter and director, Fabrice Castanier.
“It will not merely recount past anecdotes or uplifting stories. Instead, it aims to provide a long-term analysis, showing a parallel evolution between women's emancipation in society and the increasingly significant role of women's basketball.
“It will illustrate the connections between these two phenomena. It is also a film that looks to the present and focuses on the future. The story is not over," Castanier added. |
