NBA Gives “The Gift of Game” in New Christmas Day Campaign

‘Twas the night before NBA on Christmas Day when all through the house, a family of fans would soon discover many players stirring and running about.

Because beneath the stockings hung by the chimney with care, a basketball game had begun, and St. Nick (in his Nike Kobe 6 Reverse Grinches) had indeed been there.

Our family was nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of three pointers danced in their heads,

When down the stairs arose such fanfare and clatter, they sprang from their beds to see what was the matter.

What to their wondering eyes should appear, but a miniature hoop and ten toys in NBA gear.

With a tomahawk dunk so spectacular and insane they knew in a moment it must be King James.

Tatum hit a three with the flick of his wrist, and Jalen Brunson brought his gift with another assist.

They whistled and shouted at Joel’s celebration, and Giannis, Luka and Joker’s toy recreations

When the game had concluded they returned to their boxes out of sight,

Exclaiming Merry Christmas to all, and from Steph Curry “night, night!”

In additional vignettes, the family looks on with joy as Curry challenges Jokić to a game of Ho-Ho-Horse, which Jokić takes a little too literally.  Meanwhile, Luka and KD compare kicks, sizing up the Nike KD16 Ms. Wanda and the Jordan Brand Luka 2 ‘Field Trip’, only to discover they’ve been outdone by Grandpa, wearing the Nike Kobe 6 Protro ‘Reverse Grinch’, secured before its public release on Dec. 15.

The cast of toys includes NBA action figures of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jimmy Butler, Jalen Brunson, Steph Curry, Anthony Davis, Luka Dončić, Kevin Durant, Joel Embiid, LeBron James, Nikola Jokić and Jayson Tatum.

The new campaign was produced in collaboration with Translation, directed by Dave Scanlon with live-action and animation by Passion Pictures.

The NBA will feature five games on Christmas Day (Monday, Dec. 25) for the 16th year in a row, with ABC or ESPN televising each matchup.  The 76th edition of the NBA on Christmas Day will tip off on ESPN as the Bucks face the Knicks in New York (noon ET).

The next two games will air on both ABC and ESPN.  The two most recent recipients of the Larry O’Brien Trophy will go head-to-head when the 2022 NBA champion Warriors visit the 2023 NBA champion Nuggets (2:30 p.m. ET).  Next, the Lakers will host the Celtics (5 p.m. ET) as the longtime rivals meet on Christmas Day for the first time in 15 years.

The Christmas Day schedule will conclude with two more games on ESPN, with the 76ers taking on the Heat in Miami (8 p.m. ET) and the Mavericks playing the Suns in Phoenix (10:30 p.m. ET).

Puerto Rico and USA win gold at
FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup 2023

DECEMBER 3, 2023

SAN JUAN (Puerto Rico) - Home side Puerto Rico (Men) and USA (Women) put up clutch performances to win Golds at the FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup 2023 in San Juan, Puerto Rico on December 3.

In the men’s category, Puerto Rico had the home crowd jumping as they finished a perfect tournament with a splendid 14 - 18 win against powerhouse Brazil. Adrian Ocasio was crucial in holding off the strength of their opponents while Antonio Ralat came up clutch at the end with two free throws to put the game out of reach for Brazil.

Angel Matias was the star in the final as his 9 points led his side to their first Gold medal in the competition. He also finished as top scorer with 40 points as he took home the MVP award. He led the Men’s Team of the Tournament alongside Brazil’s Jonatas Mello who put up 35 points to bring Silver home and Brayan Manuel Almonte (Dominican Republic) whose 26 points proved to be key to his side winning Bronze.

In the Women’s category, USA came up clutch in the final against Brazil. They went 4-0 on their way to the final where they would face an equally dominant Brazilian side. Despite an even-keel game at the beginning, Brazil slowly started to slip away with a strong lead. With victory in grasp with a 13 - 19 lead, USA fought back thanks to Katie Lou Samuelson and Kelsey Mitchell. With seconds to go, the game found itself at 20 points apiece and USA possession. It was Dearica Hamby, with 5 crucial points so far in the game, who found the final touch with 0.1 seconds to go, scoring the incredible buzzer-beater to hand USA their second Gold Medal in the competition with a 21 - 20 victory.

Hamby had been clutch all tournament, leading her side in scoring with 33 points while having a prominent impact on defense. She was the spark for USA as she earned MVP Honors. Joining her in the Women’s Team of the Tournament is top scorer Vitoria Marcelino (Brazil) who led her side to silver and Canada’s Paige Crozon whose 35 points helped her side pick up Bronze.

NEW ORLEANS PELICANS’ CJ MCCOLLUM NAMED NBA CARES BOB LANIER COMMUNITY ASSIST AWARD OCTOBER WINNER

– NBA to donate $10,000 to Louisiana Center for Children’s Rights –

– McCollum is being recognized for his efforts in juvenile justice reform, youth engagement and education and literacy –

NEW YORK, November 29, 2023 – The NBA today announced New Orleans Pelicans guard CJ McCollum as the NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award winner for the month of October for his efforts in juvenile justice reform, youth engagement and education and literacy.  McCollum will receive the David Robinson trophy and the NBA will donate $10,000 to Louisiana Center for Children’s Rights – a non-profit whose mission is to champion the rights and well-being of children in the juvenile justice system.  The NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award recognizes a player monthly for their outstanding work in the community.

In October, McCollum joined forces with the Louisiana Center for Children’s Rights and the National Basketball Social Justice Coalition (NBSJC) to participate in a visit to the Juvenile Justice Intervention Center and Travis Hill School in New Orleans, Louisiana.  The visit included a comprehensive tour of the facilities dedicated to rehabilitation and education of youth in the justice system, and an engaging lunchtime session between McCollum and the youth.  McCollum shared his personal journey and emphasized the importance of education and resilience in the face of adversity.

McCollum’s visit was accompanied by Louisiana State Senator Royce Duplessis, who is a strong advocate for juvenile justice reform.  Following the visit, McCollum, Sen. Duplessis and leaders from the National Basketball Social Justice Coalition (NBSJC) discussed issues youth are facing in the juvenile justice system and explored collaborative solutions to the ongoing commitment of social justice.

McCollum is committed to finding solutions to systemic inequities that contribute to the cycle of recidivism among vulnerable populations.  Additionally, McCollum is dedicated to closing the education, literacy and racial wealth gaps through access to quality education for low-income students and a pathway to obtaining a post-secondary degree.  By leveraging his platform as a professional basketball player, he has created greater visibility and collaboration around a critical issue impacting the New Orleans community and the nation more broadly.

“When I first got to New Orleans, I recognized the tremendous opportunity I would have to impact lives and meet the needs of the most vulnerable in our community,” said McCollum.  “I am grateful to win this award and to continue this work with local and national partners to provide a fair and equitable experience for justice-involved youth in New Orleans.”

McCollum will be recognized in-arena as the NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award winner during pre-game of the Nov. 29 76ers-Pelicans game.  New Orleans Pelicans Governor Gayle Benson and Vice President of Basketball Operations and Team Development Swin Cash will present him with the award.

The NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award honors Bob Lanier, an NBA League Office executive and NBA Cares Ambassador for more than 30 years.  He had an enormous influence on the NBA family and young people globally, traveling the world to teach the values of the game and making a positive impact through his kindness and generosity.  The legacy he built will continue to live on through the offseason NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award recognition, which honors the next generation of players’ commitment to positively impacting their community throughout the NBA season.  To learn more, please visit https://communityassist.nba.com/.
