Tacleando la NFL: NFL Wild Card’s Games 2021

La ruta al Super Bowl 2021 comenzó el sábado 9 de enero con un triple choque que le dio inicio a la postemporada de la NFL. Los Bills derrotaron 27-24 a los Colts para lograr su primera victoria en postemporada desde el 1995. Josh Allen se lució con dos TD lanzados y uno corriendo. Allen lanzó de 35-26 para 324 yardas y corrió en 11 ocasiones para 54 yardas. Philip Rivers lanzó dos TD por los Colts y Jonathan Taylor aportó un rush TD en la derrota. Los Rams derrotaron 30-20 a los Seahawks gracias a un “clutch” TD que lanzó Jared Goff faltando 4:46 de juego y que puso 30-13 el partido. Cam Akers corrió para un TD mientras que Matt Gay se fue de 3-3 en field goals. Russell Wilson lanzó dos TD en la derrota. Darious Williams realizó un importante 42 yardas interception return TD. Tom Brady lanzó dos TD con 381 yardas en el triunfo 31-23 de los Buccaneers sobre Washington. Antonio Brown recibió uno de los TD que lanzó Brady y Leonard Fournette corrió para un TD en el triunfo. Ryan Succop se fue de 4-4 en field goals. Taylor Heinicke tuvo un juego excelente por Washington. Lanzó un TD y logró otro corriendo cuando literalmente voló de la yarda 5 al End Zone. El domingo 10 continuaron los juegos Wild Card’s de la NFL con los Ravens venciendo 20-13 a los Titans gracias a rush TD’s de la dupla Lamar Jackson & JK Dobbins. La defensa de los Ravens limitó a Derrick Henry a un total de 40 yardas en 18 intentos, donde su corrida más larga fue de 8 yardas. Los Ravens dominaron el juego en tierra 236 yardas a solo 51 de los Titans. El veterano Drew Brees lanzó dos TD y Alvin Kamara corrió para uno, en el dominante triunfo 21-9 de los Saints sobre los Bears. La defensa de los Saints fue dominante e impidió que los Bears establecieran un patrón ofensivo durante cualquier momento del juego. Los Browns lograron su primera victoria en postemporada desde el 1994 al vencer 48-37 a los Steelers. Los Browns arrancaron con fuerza el primer parcial al ganarlo 28-0. El parcial comenzó con un fumble recovery TD de Karl Joseph en solo 14 segundos. Luego Baker Mayfield lanza un TD a las manos de Jarvis Landry y Kareem Hunt completa dos rush TD. MJ Stewart Jr. estuvo dominante en la defensa con 10 tacles y una intercepción. Baker Mayfield lanzó de 34-21, 3 TD y 263 yardas en el gran triunfo de los Browns. SOBREVIVE PARA AVANZAR. Los CLEVELAND BROWNS (12-5) y los LOS ANGELES RAMS (11-6) lograron sus victorias en el Súper Fin de semana de Comodines siendo los preclasificados N° 6 en su respectivas conferencias. En 2019, tanto los MINNESOTA VIKINGS como los TENNESSEE TITANS, ambos preclasificados N° 6, ganaron en el Fin de semana de Comodines, mientras que en 2018 los INDIANAPOLIS COLTS y los PHILADELPHIA EAGLES avanzaron a la vuelta Divisional de los playoffs siendo ambos también los preclasificados N° 6.

En ambas conferencias, los Nº 5 [BALTIMORE RAVENS (12-5) y TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (12-5)] y los N° 6 (Cleveland y Los Angeles Rams) están todos aún con vida en la postemporada. Tres mariscales de campo seleccionados en la primera vuelta del Sorteo Universitario de la NFL 2018  –el de Cleveland BAKER MAYFIELD (Nº 1 global), el de Buffalo JOSH ALLEN (Nº 7) y el de Baltimore LAMAR JACKSON (Nº 32)– están proyectos para titularizar en la vuelta Divisional de la AFC. Esto marcará la segunda vez en la era del Draft unificado que tres mariscales de campo de primera vuelta provenientes del mismo draft de la NFL titularicen en la vuelta Divisional en la mismo postemporada. La única otra vez que esto ocurrió fue en los playoffs de 2008, cuando tres mariscales de campo seleccionados en la primera vuelta del Sorteo Universitario 2004 –ELI MANNINGPHILIP RIVERS y BEN ROETHLISBERGER– titularizaron en la vuelta Divisional de 2008.

El partido del sábado en la noche que tendrá a Jackson (el sábado con 24 años y nueve días de edad) y Allen (el sábado con 24 años y 240 días de edad) marca el cuarto enfrentamiento en la vuelta Divisional entre dos mariscales de campo que están por debajo de la edad de 25 en la era del Super Bowl.

Se espera que este fin de semana Mayfield y el mariscal de campo de los Los Angeles Rams JARED GOFF, selección global Nº 1 en el Sorteo Universitario de la NFL 2016, realicen sus respectivas segundas titularidades en postemporada de sus carreras. Mayfield consiguió la victoria en su primera titularidad en postemporada fuera de casa el pasado fin de semana, mientras que Goff ganó su primera titularidad de visitante en playoffs en New Orleans, en el Campeonato de la NFC 2018. JIM PLUNKETT, selección global Nº 1 en el Sorteo Universitario de la NFL 1971, es el único mariscal de campo seleccionado primero global que gana cada una de sus primeras dos titularidades en postemporada jugando de visitante.

LEYENDAS DE INVIERNO. Cuando el mariscal de campo de Tampa Bay TOM BRADY (el domingo con 43 años y 167 días de edad) y el de New Orleans DREW BREES (el domingo 42 años), los dos pasadores más prolíficos en la historia de la NFL, se encuentren en la vuelta Divisional de la NFC, será el primer partido de postemporada en la historia de la NFL en tener dos mariscales de campo titulares rivales con edad de age 40 o más y que su edad combinada (el domingo 85 años y 169 días) sea la más alta combinadas combinando mariscales de campo titulares que se enfrentan en un mismo partido (temporada regular o postemporada) en los anales de la liga.

HE AQUÍ LOS CAMPEONES. Los KANSAS CITY CHIEFS, campeones reinantes del Super Bowl (14-2), el domingo reciben a los CLEVELAND BROWNS(12-5) en la vuelta Divisional de la AFC (3:05 PM, hora de New York, CBS/CBS All Access/ESPN Deportes). Los Chiefs buscan convertirse en el primer equipo desde los NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS de 2003-04 que gana títulos de Super Bowl consecutivos.

Remontándonos a la vuelta Divisional de 2018, los Chiefs han anotado al menos 30 puntos en cinco partidos de postemporada consecutivos. Con al menos 30 puntos contra Cleveland, Kansas City igualaría a NEW ORLEANS (seis partidos consecutivos entre el 16 de enero de 2010 y el 14 de enero de 2012) para la mayor cantidad de partidos de postemporada consecutivos con al menos 30 puntos en la historia de la NFL.

(NYSE: FDX) announced today quarterbacks Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills), Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs) and Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay Packers) are the finalists for the 2020 FedEx Air NFL Player of the Year honors, while running backs Dalvin Cook (Minnesota Vikings), Derrick Henry (Tennessee Titans) and Alvin Kamara (New Orleans Saints) are the finalists for the 2020 FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Year

In the weeks leading up to Super Bowl LV, fans have the chance to cast their vote for the one quarterback and one running back they feel had the year's best Air & Ground performances. Today through February 2 at 3:00 pm ET, fans can cast their vote for each category at nfl.com/fedex or via a Twitter poll on the @NFL official handle.

For 18 years, FedEx has recognized the NFL quarterbacks and running backs delivering the best performances for their fans and teammates each season. You can help celebrate these standout performances by voting for the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Year.

As part of the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Year program, FedEx will donate $20,000 to Direct Relief in the name of each of the winning players. The $40,000 donation will help deliver emergency medical backpacks to local community clinics and health centers throughout the U.S. and in the cities that the winning players play in. Each backpack will support up to 500 people in the community.

A closer look at the FedEx Air NFL Player of the Year finalists: 

  • Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen had the fourth-highest passer rating (107.2) in the league this season and ranked fifth in both passing yards (4,544) and touchdown passes (37), each Buffalo single-season franchise records as the Bills earned their first division title since 1995. He also had eight rushing touchdowns and became the first player with at least 4,500 passing yards, 35 touchdown passes and five rushing touchdowns in a single season in NFL history. Allen recorded eight games with at least 300 passing yards, tied for the third-most in the league this season.

 

  •  Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes ranked second the NFL with 4,740 passing yards and ranked fourth with 38 touchdown passes to help the Chiefs earn their third consecutive AFC West Division title and the No. 1 overall seed in the AFC playoffs. He became the third player with at least 4,000 passing yards in three of his first four seasons in NFL history, joining Peyton Manning and Pro Football Hall of Famer Dan Marino. Mahomes, who had the second-most games with at least 300 passing yards this season (nine), became the first player with at least 30 completions and 300 passing yards in four consecutive games (Week 8-9, Week 11-12) in league annals.

 

  • ·Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers led the NFL with a career-high 48 touchdown passes this season, tied with Pro Football Hall of Famer Dan Marino (48 touchdown passes in 1984) for the fifth-most touchdown passes in a single season in NFL history, and became the first player in league annals with three seasons of at least 40 touchdown passes to help the Packers earn the NFC North division title and No. 1 overall seed in the NFC playoffs. He also led the NFL with a 121.5 passer rating – the second-highest single-season mark by a quarterback in league history, trailing only the 122.5 rating he had in 2011 – and became the first quarterback in NFL history with a passer rating of 100-or-higher in 14 games within a single season in league history. Rodgers had 12 games with at least three touchdown passes this season, tied with Tom Brady (12 games in 2007) for the most such games in a single season in NFL history.​

A closer look at the FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Year finalists: 

  • Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook ranked second in the NFL with a career-high 1,557 rushing yards and ranked tied for second with a career-best 16 rushing touchdowns. He registered the second-most games with at least 100 rushing yards (eight) in 2020 and became the sixth player in NFL history – first since Pro Football Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith (1994) – with a rushing touchdown in each of his first seven games of a season. In Week 8 and Week 9, Cook third player in league annals with at least 225 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns in consecutive games, joining Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown (1963) and Deuce McAllister (2003).

 

  • Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry led the NFL with 2,027 rushing yards and 17 rushing touchdowns in 2020 and became the eighth player in league annals to rush for at least 2,000 yards in a season. He became the first player in NFL history to record three games with at least 200 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns in a single season. Henry, who led the NFL with 1,540 rushing yards and was named the FedEx Ground Player of the Year in 2019, is the first player since Pro Football Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson (2006-07) to lead the league in rushing yards in consecutive seasons.

     
  • ·New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara led the league in scrimmage touchdowns (21) and ranked third with 1,688 scrimmage yards (932 rushing, 756 receiving). In Week 16, he recorded six rushing touchdowns, tied with Pro Football Hall of Famer Ernie Nevers (1929) for the most in a single game in NFL history. Kamara, who recorded five games with at least two touchdowns this season, has 18 career games with two-or-more touchdowns, tied for the most by a player in his first four seasons in NFL history.

SURVIVE AND ADVANCEThe CLEVELAND BROWNS (12-5) and LOS ANGELES RAMS (11-6) both earned victories on Super Wild Card Weekend as the No. 6 seeds in their respective conferences. ONWARD & UPWARD: EIGHT TEAMS REMAIN STANDING

AS NFL ENTERS DIVISIONAL PLAYOFFS​

Playoff football is a harmonious symphony, and the volume is about to rise.

The NFL has reached the Divisional stage of the 2020 playoffs and the two conferences have distinctly different personalities.

In the AFC, the average age of the four starting quarterbacks on gameday will be 24 years and 345 days, marking a single conference’s youngest group of starting quarterbacks in the Divisional round of the playoffs in NFL history.

The NFC, meanwhile, features three of the most prolific quarterbacks in league annals. Tampa Bay’s TOM BRADY (six Super Bowl wins), New Orleans’ DREW BREES (one) and Green Bay’s AARON RODGERS (one) have combined for eight Super Bowl victories, more than any group of starting quarterbacks ever in a single conference’s Divisional round.

Kicking off the weekend on Saturday (4:35 PM ET, FOX/FOX Deportes), the LOS ANGELES RAMS and the NFL’s No. 1-ranked scoring defense (18.5 points allowed per game) travel to meet the league leader in scoring offense (31.8 points scored per game), Rodgers and the GREEN BAY PACKERS.

Then, two of the league’s most electrifying young players square off in Western New York on Saturday (8:15 PM ET, NBC/Universo), when LAMAR JACKSON and the BALTIMORE RAVENS travel to clash with JOSH ALLEN and the BUFFALO BILLS.

  • Donald has 85.5 sacks in his first seven seasons and surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer DERRICK THOMAS (85) for the most sacks by a player in his first seven seasons since 1982, when the individual sack became an official statistic.
  • Green Bay quarterback AARON RODGERS led the NFL with a career-high 48 touchdown passes this season, tied with Pro Football Hall of Famer DAN MARINO (48 touchdown passes in 1984) for the fifth-most touchdown passes in a single season in NFL history.
  • Rodgers led the NFL with a 121.5 passer rating, the second-highest single-season mark by a quarterback in NFL history, trailing only his 122.5 rating in 2011.
  • Rodgers enters Saturday’s game having thrown a touchdown pass in 14 consecutive postseason games.
  • Packers wide receiver DAVANTE ADAMS led the NFL with 18 touchdown receptions, tied for the third-most touchdowns by a wide receiver in a single-season in NFL history. Only Pro Football Hall of Famers RANDY MOSS (23 touchdowns in 2007) and JERRY RICE (23 touchdowns in 1987) had more.

NFL AND NFLPA COVID-19 MONITORING TESTING RESULTS

The National Football League and NFL Players Association today announced the COVID-19 monitoring testing results for January 3– January 9.

Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 follow the joint NFL-NFLPA Treatment Protocol. They are immediately isolated, not permitted to access club facilities, or to have direct contact with players or personnel. Club medical staff are in regular communication with individuals who test positive to monitor symptoms.

Monitoring Testing results for January 3– January 9:

  • 17,459 tests were administered to a total of 2,933 players and team personnel.
  • 6,850 tests were administered to 1,037 players; 10,609 tests were administered to 1,896 personnel.
  • There were 3 new confirmed positive tests among players and 22 new confirmed positives among other personnel. 

Total test results for the entire Monitoring Testing period to-date, Aug 1 – Jan 9:

  • During Monitoring Testing from Aug 1 – Jan 2, 259 players and 454 other personnel were confirmed positive cases.
  • Approximately 939,680 tests were administered to players and personnel during the Aug 1 – Jan 9 period.

 

NFL and USAA Announce Finalists for the 10th Annual Salute to Service Award Presented by USAA

Award Recipient to be Recognized at NFL Honors

The NFL and USAA, an Official NFL Salute to Service Partner, announced AMB Sports and Entertainment CEO STEVE CANNON, New England Patriots Long Snapper JOE CARDONA, and San Francisco 49ers General Manager and NFL Legend JOHN LYNCH as the finalists for the tenth annual Salute to Service Award presented by USAA.

Cannon, Cardona, and Lynch were selected for their exceptional efforts to honor and support members of the military community. The Salute to Service Award recipient will be recognized at NFL Honors, a primetime awards special to air nationally the Saturday before Super Bowl LV.

USAA, a leading provider of insurance and other services to U.S. military members, veterans and their families, will contribute $25,000 in the award recipient's honor to the official aid societies representing all five military branches. The NFL will match USAA's donation of $25,000, which will be donated to the award recipient's military charity of choice. The award recipient will receive a specially designed military challenge coin, recognizing their commitment to the military. In what has become a long-standing tradition, challenge coins are presented to members of the military community to encourage excellence, boost morale or to recognize a fellow brother- or sister-in-arms.

"America's military community is stronger thanks to the service and support from all three worthy finalists for tenth annual 'Salute to Service Award presented by USAA,'" said Vice Admiral (Ret.) JOHN BIRD, USAA Senior Vice President of Military Affairs. Cannon's commitment to the military and related causes began with his own personal commitment. Cannon, who graduated with honors from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1986, was Airborne Ranger qualified and served as a 1st Lieutenant in West Germany during the fall of the Iron Curtain. During his time in the Army, he also served five years as an artillery officer. Through Cannon's countless hours of service to multiple military non-profits over the years, his constant "military first" mindset and utilization of the NFL's platform has provided active duty service members, veterans and military families with first class experiences and support. In addition to empowering and giving back to the military community, Cannon has played a large role in bringing awareness to the general population on the importance of honoring and recognizing our nation's heroes. Through Cannon's military and professional career, he has consistently found ways to implement programs in service to our military, active duty specifically. Upon joining the Atlanta Falcons organization, he realized the impact of the NFL platform and challenged the Club to be "best in class" and to "become the benchmark franchise in all of professional sports" in terms of our military outreach and appreciation. With that challenge, he began to set up major trips each spring following the conclusion of football season that would allow him and the team to get up close and personal with those serving to protect our freedom. And with that, the Atlanta Falcons became the first ever NFL team to conduct their own USO Tour.

JOE CARDONA (Long Snapper, New England Patriots)

Joe Cardona attended the Naval Academy for four years prior to his 2015 rookie season where he was an Ensign in the Navy and worked as a staff officer at the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Rhode Island. That season, he was working his second job four days a week, which included a 24-hour shift during the team's "day off." In 2017, Joe was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade and served as a junior commissioned officer in the United States Navy and in 2019, Joe was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in the Navy. He proudly wears his Naval uniform as the team boards the plane for away games. Joe has facilitated more than a dozen re-enlistment and retirement ceremonies at Gillette Stadium for fellow military members. He also led a handful of free football clinics for military children at military bases across New England and replaced military family toys that were burned in a fire three years ago at Joint Base Cape Cod. In 2017, Joe rallied teammates and coaches to each donate a pair of tickets to their game against Atlanta and over 150 military members, who had recently returned from deployment, were invited to the game and participated in a special pregame ceremony. Each year during Memorial Day weekend, Joe helps plant more than 37,000 American flags in the Boston Common to honor the brave men and women from Massachusetts that have lost their lives defending our country. Joe also offers his support to the Travis Manion Foundation, a nonprofit that empowers veterans and families of fallen heroes to develop character in future generations.

JOHN LYNCH (NFL Legend & General Manager, San Francisco 49ers)

Lynch has a longstanding appreciation for the United States military. Both his grandfather and great uncle volunteered for the Army the day after the deadly attacks on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Since 1998, Lynch has frequented various Air Force bases and military hospitals to personally thank those serving in the military, in Florida, Maryland and Colorado.  Lynch was also the recipient of the 2006 Bart Starr Award. Every year since 2011, he has hosted military families at the annual Lynch Christmas Party and each holiday season with the 49ers, he hosts military families and underserved youth for a holiday party and practice visit. In 2018 and 2019, Lynch welcomed more than 250 active duty troops and veterans for a VIP training camp practice experience. In November 2017, Lynch spearheaded a visit to the USO office at the San Jose Military Entrance Processing Station to congratulate newly enlisted recruits heading off to basic training. In October 2019, Lynch welcomed a group of decorated veterans, including 5 purple heart recipients, when the 49ers played in Washington, D.C. Lynch's commitment to supporting veteran organizations, like USO Bay Area, has driven a close partnership with the nonprofit and the 49ers, which has led to new opportunities to support the troops and their families with game tickets, Salute to Service program involvement, choosing USO Bay Area as the 50/50 raffle beneficiary for the 2019 Salute to Service game, and delivering care kits to isolated troops in partnership with USAA during the COVID-19 pandemic.
