WHAT:          As part of the NBA family’s continued support of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), the league will host a roundtable conversation with leading voices from the NBA and HBCU communities to discuss the NBA’s ongoing commitment to HBCUs and highlight the pivotal role HBCUs play in society on Friday, October 22 at 3:00 p.m. ET

The discussion will explore the rich tradition and unique impact of HBCUs, unpacking the opportunities and challenges facing institutions and students and identifying key insights to guide the NBA’s development of HBCU-serving programming.   Portland Trail Blazers forward and Tennessee State University alumnus Robert Covington, Howard University president Dr. Wayne A.I. Following its stream on NBA Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, NBA.com and the NBA app, the roundtable will also air on NBA TV at 7:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, October 26.

NBA 75TH ANNIVERSARY TEAM ANNOUNCED

NEW YORK, Oct. 21, 2021 – A total of 158 NBA championships and 730 NBA All-Star selections.  A combined 110 Kia NBA Most Valuable Player Awards and Bill Russell NBA Finals MVP Awards.  More than 1.5 million points scored.

Those are just some of the collective accomplishments of the players who comprise the NBA 75th Anniversary Team, which was announced across TNT and ESPN from Oct. 19-21 as the league tipped off its landmark 75th Anniversary Season.

The NBA 75th Anniversary Team was selected by a blue-ribbon panel of current and former NBA players, coaches, general managers and team and league executives, WNBA legends and sportswriters and broadcasters.  Voters were asked to select the 75 Greatest Players in NBA History without regard to position.  Panelists did not rank their selections.  Current and former players were not allowed to vote for themselves.

As a result of a tie in the voting, the 75th Anniversary Team features 76 players.  Team highlights include:

  • Eleven active players have been named to the 75th Anniversary Team: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Carmelo Anthony, Stephen Curry, Anthony Davis, Kevin Durant, James Harden, LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard, Damian Lillard, Chris Paul and Russell Westbrook.

  • All 50 members of the NBA 50th Anniversary Team, which was named in 1996, have been selected to the 75th Anniversary Team.

  • The 75th Anniversary Team includes four players who played in the first NBA All-Star Game in 1951 (Paul Arizin, Bob Cousy, George Mikan and Dolph Schayes), the first winner of the Kia NBA Most Valuable Player Award (Bob Pettit for the 1955-56 season) and the first winner of the Bill Russell NBA Finals MVP Award (Jerry West for the 1969 NBA Finals).

  • Bill Russell joins Cousy, Mikan and Pettit as the only four players who have been named to all four NBA Anniversary Teams: the 25th Anniversary Team (10 players named), 35th Anniversary Team (11 players named), 50th Anniversary Team and 75th Anniversary Team.  (The 25th Anniversary Team was the only one of the four teams that did not allow for the inclusion of active players at the time.)

  • Six international players from six countries and territories have been selected to the 75th Anniversary Team: Antetokounmpo (Greece), Tim Duncan (U.S. Virgin Islands), Patrick Ewing (Jamaica), Steve Nash (Canada), Dirk Nowitzki (Germany) and Hakeem Olajuwon (Nigeria).

  • The five NBA legends who are serving as ambassadors for the 75th Anniversary Season are part of the 75th Anniversary Team: Clyde Drexler, Magic Johnson, Nowitzki, Pettit and Oscar Robertson.  Representing different eras of the league’s history, the ambassadors will make appearances throughout the 2021-22 season and have a significant presence at NBA All-Star 2022 in Cleveland.

The NBA 75th Anniversary Team is listed below in alphabetical order, followed by the list of voters.  The balloting was tabulated by the independent accounting firm Ernst & Young LLP.  For player profiles on each member of the 75th Anniversary Team, click here and visit NBA.com/75.

NBA EXTENDS SUPPORT OF HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES TO ADVANCE EDUCATIONAL, CAREER AND ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES ACROSS ALL 107 HBCUS

– NBA and NBA Foundation to Launch New Annual Fellowship Program for HBCU Students –

– First-Ever NBA HBCU Classic to be Played in Cleveland as Part of the Celebration of the NBA 75th Anniversary –

NEW YORK, Oct. 21, 2021 – The NBA today announced an extension of its ongoing commitment to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with new programs designed to create greater opportunity for students and alumni, encourage economic advancement and further celebrate their rich traditions.  As part of this partnership, the NBA will develop new programs and events focused on the HBCU community – specifically around professional development, career advancement and increased support and awareness for HBCU athletics and institutions.

The NBA is committed to supporting the growth of the next generation of leaders from the Black community.  HBCUs – which produce 20 percent of the country’s Black college graduates but only account for three percent of all colleges in the United States – have historically been under-resourced, averaging one-eighth the size of endowments of historically white colleges and universities.  The NBA’s programming will advance educational, career and economic opportunities in collaboration with HBCU networks, and will focus on three areas:

New Fellowship Program for Career Development:

  • Launching in 2022, the NBA and its teams will offer a new paid fellowship program for undergraduate and graduate students.  The program, which will be led by the NBA Foundation, will offer HBCU students the opportunity to gain real-life insights and professional experience around the business and operations of basketball.  The students will work in positions at the league office and NBA and WNBA teams, and be matched with a league or team employee mentor as part of their experience.  Applications for the program will open on Careers.NBA.com in the coming months.

NBA HBCU Classic:

  • Building off the success of NBA All-Star 2021, the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) will once again highlight the HBCU community during NBA All-Star 2022 in Cleveland.
  • The celebrations will be highlighted by a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) matchup between Howard University and Morgan State University men’s basketball teams.  The game will be played at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland on February 19, 2022 and will be broadcast live.
  • During NBA All-Star, more than $1 million will be contributed in support to the HBCU community through the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), UNCF (United Negro College Fund) and academic institutions.  Additionally, HBCUs will be showcased through unique content, storytelling and special performances.

Additional Programming:

  • The NBA, G League and Basketball Africa League will leverage their pre-Draft combines and showcase events for HBCU players, coaches and athletic trainers.  These engagements will increase exposure and opportunities to pursue professional basketball careers.
  • The league will expand the NBA’s targeted referee development strategy to leverage existing programs and focus on identification, training and educational opportunities for HBCU students and alumni in the officiating pipeline.
  • The NBA 2K League will host events with HBCU networks to introduce students to careers in gaming and esports, creating pathways for students to pursue careers in the growing industry.
  • HBCU alumni and Black entrepreneurs will partner with the league as part of the NBA’s commitment to onboarding more minority-owned businesses as league licensees.
  • The NBA will air special alternate game telecasts this season featuring interactive enhancements on League Pass and will work with HBCU schools to provide special experiences around those select games.

These new efforts will bolster the league’s support of HBCUs and their students through additional scholarship programs, business case competitions, mentorship, networking and internship opportunities with partners, teams, the NBA Foundation and other members of the NBA family.  Former NBA Commissioner David Stern served as a founding member of the TMCF Board of Directors for more than 30 years.

Executive Quotes

NBA Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer, Mark Tatum: “The NBA family recognizes the storied and prominent role that HBCUs have played in our society for decades.  We also recognize that within our commitments to increase Black representation across the league and grow the game, we can create educational, athletic and career opportunities through engagement with these institutions.  Through continued collaboration with partners like TMCF and UNCF, our teams and members of the HBCU community, we look forward to expanding support of students and alumni in meaningful ways.”

Howard University Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Kery Davis: “Howard University is incredibly proud to take part in the HBCU Classic during this year’s NBA All-Star.  The NBA and HBCUs are natural partners because of our rich legacy elevating under-represented communities and our shared passion for cultivating opportunities for people of color.  We appreciate the NBA’s commitment to supporting our institutions, and we are excited to showcase the on- and off-the-court talent and excellence that has come to define student-athletes from the MEAC and HBCUs.”

Morgan State University Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Dr. Ed Scott: “As an association, the NBA should be commended for the foresight and willingness to address important issues surrounding diversity, equity and inclusion.  The creation of the NBA HBCU Classic is a clear demonstration of the NBA’s commitment to promoting HBCUs and showcasing the talented young men and women on our campuses."

Thurgood Marshall College Fund President and CEO, Dr. Harry L. Williams: “We are pleased to continue our relationship with the NBA to build upon our commitment to our students, providing them with opportunities for learning, networking and collaborations.  We both recognize there is a need for more minority professionals in the industry, and HBCUs have one of the strongest recruiting bases for talent.  I appreciate the NBA creating space for our students while identifying meaningful opportunities that bring value to both the NBA and TMCF.”

UNCF CEO, Dr. Michael Lomax: “The NBA’s focus on HBCUs and inclusion of the Black community is outstanding.  We particularly appreciate the spotlight the league is providing to our member-institutions.  All HBCUs deserve this kind of attention, as they have been underserved and under-recognized for decades.  Thanks to support from the NBA, we hope many more doors of opportunity will open for the students HBCUs work so diligently to educate and graduate.”

JR. NBA WEEK TO TIP OFF WITH LAUNCH OF NEW PARTNERSHIPS AND INITIATIVES TO ADVANCE ACCESS IN YOUTH SPORTS

- Jr. NBA and Laureus Sport for Good to Provide Free, Year-Round Training to 10,000 Youth Basketball Coaches-

- In Conjunction with the 2021 WNBA Finals presented by YouTube TV, Jr. NBA and AT&T to Host Her Time To Play Community Conversations Featuring a WNBA Player and Coach from Each Finals Team -

NEW YORK, Oct. 7, 2021 – The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) today announced a series of partnerships and initiatives to advance access in youth sports as part of the seventh annual Jr. NBA Week, which will take place Oct. 9-15. The partnerships and initiatives aim to combat barriers to participation as well as the disruption to youth sports access caused by the pandemic by enhancing youth sports coaching, increasing opportunities for girls to play and learn the game, and offering new school-based programming in communities across the U.S.:

Jr. NBA Coach Training and Resources:

Understanding that coaches play a critical role in developing young athletes and creating a positive youth sports experience, the Jr. NBA is partnering with Laureus Sport for Good USA – an organization committed to improving the lives of young people through sports – to launch a free online training program for youth basketball coaches, organizers and educators.  The curriculum, which will include topics such as social and emotional learning (SEL), leadership, and player-coach relationships, will focus on fostering inclusiveness and positive experiences for youth players.

The program aims to train more than 10,000 youth basketball coaches to become SEL-credentialed over the next 12 months.

Her Time To Play:

Through a new partnership with Girls Leadership, a leadership development nonprofit organization that teaches girls to exercise the power of their voice, the NBA and WNBA will provide resources and leadership development curriculum rooted in SEL to enhance Her Time To Play, an initiative launched in 2018 to inspire young girls to play the game, develop as leaders and connect with one another through basketball.  The partnership will help expand Her Time To Play to reach 20,000 girls through basketball clinics, life skills sessions and online learning.

During the week of the 2021 WNBA Finals presented by YouTube TV, the Jr. NBA and AT&T will be hosting Her Time To Play community conversations for girls ages 10-17 in the home markets of each WNBA Finals team.  Each conversation will feature a WNBA player and coach from the market’s corresponding Finals team who will lead a discussion about the challenges and opportunities for girls in sports, followed by a live Q&A with the participants.

School-Based Programming:

With a continued focus on providing broad-based access to the sport and eliminating barriers to participation, the Jr. NBA will bring enhanced basketball programming to more than 3,000 elementary and middle schools across the country.  This includes mental health and performance programming through Jr. NBA Next Level Mentality, a digital content series dedicated to teaching kids the importance of mind-body connection and how to gain a mental edge in sports and life using tips and resources from professional mental performance coaches and players from the NBA and WNBA.

“Every child deserves the opportunity to participate in sports and benefit from the values they teach, including teamwork, respect, determination and community,” said NBA Senior Vice President, Head of Youth Development David Krichavsky.  “Making basketball more accessible to young people – regardless of race, gender or socio-economic status – and fostering positive youth sports experiences has been a part of the Jr. NBA’s mission for years, but is even more imperative as the youth sports community builds back from the pandemic. We look forward to working with Laureus Sport for Good, Girls Leadership and other community organizations to do our part to address gaps in youth sports participation.”

Throughout Jr. NBA Week, all 30 NBA teams will host a series of virtual or in-person youth basketball events and programs for players, parents, coaches and referees in their communities in accordance with local public health guidelines.  In partnership with Laureus Sport for Good, the Jr. NBA will host an outdoor basketball clinic at Brooklyn Bridge Park in New York for youth from three local community organizations: PeacePlayers, Riverside Hawks and Kids in the Game.  The clinic will feature on-court skill development and life skills sessions that will allow participants to reflect on their youth basketball experience and ways to make the game more accessible.
