#ClutchMLB: 26 fue la cosecha de Boricuas seleccionados en el MLB 2016 Draft

The 2012 Draft was a banner one in Puerto Rico, with shortstop Carlos Correa going No. 1 overall and four players going in the top three rounds. Since then, however, a Puerto Rican player hasn't been drafted before the third round. That will almost certainly change in 2016, once again with a talented shortstop leading the way, despite the fact that teams were reportedly alerted a week before the Draft that Perez had tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs. Perez has everything needed to stay at shortstop long-term. He has good speed and instincts, allowing him to have outstanding range. Perez's plus arm works very well from everywhere, and his hands work extremely well. Able to make the flashy play, perhaps his only flaw defensively is that he can try to do too much on occasion. Perez's bat is behind his glove, but there are tools to work with. He can ambush a fastball early in the count, but his approach at the plate and pitch recognition need to be refined. Perez's speed works offensively, and he could grow into more power as he matures. Premium middle infielders are hard to come by. And while Perez’s inconsistent spring was punctuated with his failed drug test, he's flashed enough raw tools that he still has a shot to go in the first round, even if it’s not in the top 10 picks, where he seemed destined to land. It's a strong crop of talent from Puerto Rico this year, led by shortstop Delvin Perez. After Perez comes Feliciano, the offensive-minded backstop many feel has a chance to go in the first few rounds. The key to Feliciano is his bat. He has some strength in his swing with over-the-fence potential. He's not an all-or-nothing hitter, showing a solid approach at times. Especially for a catcher, Feliciano runs well and that athleticism does help him behind the plate. Some worry about his ability to catch long-term. Hhe does have a solid arm, but the rest of his defensive game is still a work in progress. If he can't stay behind the plate, there's a chance he could handle left field, though that might be a stretch. It's said that hitters find work. A team rolling the dice on Feliciano will hope he can stick behind the plate, but it's the offensive potential that might push him up boards. When you're a big shortstop initially from the Puerto Rican Baseball Academy, there are going to be the inevitable comparisons to the Astros' Carlos Correa, who was the No. 1 overall pick in 2012 out of the Academy. Curbelo, who moved to Cocoa High School in Florida for his senior year, isn't on Correa's level, but does bring a lot to the table. Curbelo performed well on the summer showcase circuit, at Perfect Game National and the East Coast Pro Showcase, capping things off by playing in PG's All-American Classic. Over the summer, he displayed excellent bat speed and some offensive upside. He's been inconsistent this spring, starting off particularly slowly. Fairly physically mature, Curbelo does have some power to tap into. That could be important because unlike Correa, most believe Curbelo won't be able to stay at shortstop. A move to third base could be in order, where his defensive actions could make him an above-average defender at the hot corner. A team taking Curbelo early could very well send him out as a shortstop to see what happens, but that team will also hope the bat they saw more consistently over the summer is the one that will allow him to profile well at an infield corner spot.
