Tampa Bay Buccaneers Practice
Feb. 4, 2021
By Rick Stroud, Tampa Bay Times
Pro Football Writers of America

TAMPA -- There may only be a crowd of approximately 25,000 fans inside Raymond James Stadium Sunday during Super Bowl LV, but Bucs coach Bruce Arians wanted his team to practice Thursday with artificial crowd noise.

During the 1 hour, 45-minute workout, the volume was pumped up on loudspeakers for both the offense and defense.

The Bucs practiced outdoors at the AdventHealth Training Center Thursday under clear skies, little to no wind and with temperatures at 55 degrees and warming rapidly.

Arians said he is concerned communication could be a problem Sunday. During the regular season, mostly empty stadiums made it easier to communicate, he said.

"I'm hoping there will be some crowd noise when we're playing defense because our guys are used to talking to each other,'' Arians said. "They've talked to each other all year and now all of a sudden, they've got to use hand signals.

"The offense, we used (crowd noise) a bunch before we went to Green Bay, and it was loud as hell up there.''

Several injured Bucs players continued to progress and practiced without incident, including receiver Antonio Brown (knee), safeties Antoine Winfield, Jr. (ankle) and Jordan Whitehead (shouder) and linebacker Lavonte David (hamstring). Whitehead once again wore a black non-contact jersey.

Outside linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul (knee), who did not practice Wednesday, returned on Thursday on a limited basis. Defensive tackle Steve McLendon took a "veteran's day off,'' Arians said.

One player who was added to the injury list was tight end Cameron Brate, who has a back strain and was limited.

"We'll see how (Brown's) knee swells tomorrow,'' Arians said. "That was our last full day of practice. We'll see how sore Jordan is.''

In complying with practice protocols, the Bucs players wore splash guards inside the face masks of their helmet.

The Bucs scout team defense is doing its best to simulate the Chiefs' high-powered offense.

Arians said Codey McElroy is playing Travis Kelce's tight end position on the look squad. McElroy played college baseball and basketball.

Receiver Cyril Grayson, an All-American sprinter at LSU, has been playing the role of Chiefs receiver Tyreek Hill.

"He a 4.25 (40-yard dash) guy,'' Arians said of Grayson.

Kansas City Chiefs Practice
Feb. 4, 2021
By Herbie Teope, The Kansas City Star
Pro Football Writers of America

KANSAS CITY, Mo. –– Winter conditions didn't stop the Chiefs from getting in a Thursday practice.

The Chiefs found an easy solution by electing for an indoor workout at their training facility rather than brave the outdoors where blowing snow and temperatures hovered in the low 30s, a far cry from what awaits the Chiefs in Tampa for Super Bowl LV.

There are no worries about a quick acclimation to Florida weather, however.

"We moved indoors because of the weather, but we'll be all right," Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said. "It was warm in here."

With warm air blowing through the ventilation system, the Chiefs went to work in the controlled environment without four players.

Left tackle Eric Fisher (Achilles) and rookie linebacker Willie Gay Jr. (knee, ankle) continued to miss work. Wide receiver Demarcus Robinson and center Daniel Kilgore, both of whom  were placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday, were not present for practice.

Wide receiver Sammy Watkins (calf) and running back Le'Veon Bell (knee), both designated as limited participants in Wednesday's practice, were observed working on the field with teammates.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs' opponent, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, simulated a long halftime during Wednesday's practice by moving from outdoors to indoors.

The Chiefs have a relatively intact roster from their Super Bowl-winning team of the 2019 season, so experience will matter in dealing with built-in breaks during the game. Reid also points out his players and coaching staff are ready as part of their game preparations.

"We cover all that," Reid said. "We cover it all."

The Chiefs wrapped up Thursday practice in good spirits and eye Super Sunday, which is a short two days away.

The final preparations include a final media session Thursday ahead of two more practices Friday and Saturday. The Chiefs then board a flight Saturday afternoon for the trip to Tampa.

Knowing the last round of media availability signals the closeness of the game had the Chiefs head coach in a good mood.

"I'm real happy," Reid said with an enthusiastic thumbs-up gesture.

"Steve is a role model we can all look up to on how to selflessly support the military community and a deserving recipient of the 10th annual 'Salute to Service Award presented by USAA'," said Vice Admiral (Ret.) John Bird, USAA Senior Vice President of Military Affairs. "We thank Steve for his service in the U.S. Army and congratulate him on this award. With four of the past five award recipients having been nominated by the team, we also want to recognize the Atlanta Falcons and Steve for their leadership in creating a culture of military appreciation."

Cannon's commitment to the military and related causes began with his own personal commitment. He graduated with honors from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1986, was Airborne Ranger qualified and served as a 1st Lieutenant in West Germany during the fall of the Iron Curtain. During his time in the Army, he also served five years as an artillery officer.

Upon joining the Atlanta Falcons organization, he realized the impact of the NFL platform and challenged the club to be "best in class" and to "become the benchmark franchise in all of professional sports" in terms of its military outreach and appreciation. With that challenge, he began to set up major trips each spring following the conclusion of football season that would allow him and the team to get up close and personal with those serving to protect our freedom. And with that, the Atlanta Falcons became the first ever NFL team to conduct their own USO Tour.

"It is truly an honor to be selected as the NFL's 2020 USAA Salute to Service award recipient. Supporting our military is a key pillar of the Atlanta Falcons organization, and what I consider to be a life purpose of mine," said Steve Cannon, CEO AMB Sports and Entertainment, the parent company of the Atlanta Falcons. "I'm grateful to the NFL to be able to use this platform to shine a spotlight on the service men and women who serve around the world, and I want to thank Atlanta Falcons owner, Arthur Blank, for always encouraging our franchise, and the entire Blank Family of Businesses, to be the benchmark of what it means to support our military," Cannon continued. "There is an immeasurable debt we owe to those who sacrifice so much for our freedom, and I look forward to continuing to work to recognize and honor them."

Through Cannon's countless hours of service to multiple military non-profits over the years, his constant "military first" mindset and utilization of the NFL's platform has provided active duty service members, veterans and military families with first class experiences and support. In addition to empowering and giving back to the military community, Cannon has played a large role in bringing awareness to the general population on the importance of honoring and recognizing our nation's heroes.

Winners Named for NFL’s Sixth Annual “1st and Future” Pitch Competition Powered by AWS

Winners awarded a total of $150,000 in primetime NFL Network pitch competition

New York – February 2, 2021 – The National Football League (NFL), in collaboration with Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), an Amazon.com, Inc. company (NASDAQ: AMZN), today announced the winners of 1st and Future. The NFL's sixth annual competition, designed to spur novel advancements in athlete safety and performance, aired on February 2, 2021 at 8:00 p.m. ET on NFL Network in the lead up to Super Bowl LV.

Organic Robotics Corporation (ORC) won the top award among four finalists in the Innovations to Advance Athlete Health and Safety category, which featured pitches for products designed to improve player health and safety. ORC won $50,000 for its submission, a Light Lace™ sensor designed to use light to measure muscle fatigue and respiration. The stretchable sensor can be integrated into garments or even helmets, and the information generated aims to help athletes and training staff better assess injury risk factors while optimizing performance.

The runner-up in the Innovations category was Genesis Helmets, Inc., a helmet company applying its proprietary computational modeling and patented technology to try to create better-performing football helmets. Genesis Helmets, Inc. won $25,000.

The NFL also announced the winners of the Computer Vision category during the show. Computer scientists received actual NFL game data and were challenged to create ways to detect on-field helmet impacts. Nearly 7,800 submissions from 55 countries were received. The first-place finisher was Dmytro Poplavskiy from Brisbane, Australia, whose winning entry uses ultra-high-resolution imagery and data to track and analyze helmet impacts.

"We are energized by all the fantastic pitches we heard tonight and the continued evolution of the 1st and Future platform, new to TV this year," said Jeff Miller, NFL Executive Vice President overseeing the league's health and safety programs. "The NFL continues to bring in innovators and entrepreneurs to apply their technologies to football. We've seen products start on the 1st & Future stage and then appear on NFL fields relatively quickly, and that's a huge advance for the league and for our efforts to protect players at every level of sport."

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, AWS CEO Andy Jassy, and Arizona Cardinals Wide Receiver Larry Fitzgerald joined the program to discuss how the use of data and innovative technologies are driving new insights into player health, safety and performance in the NFL.

"We see a need to be able to look at all of the helmet impacts and to be able to look at the data that comes from that so that we can create better protective equipment, change the rules and change some of the techniques that are coached and played," said Goodell during the panel discussion. "We were doing that manually. And by using machine learning, we can do that much more rapidly and make a difference."

Participants faced off in front of a panel of judges:

  • Priya Ponnapalli, Ph.D., Senior Manager and Principal Scientist, Amazon Machine Learning Solutions Lab
  • Reggie Scott, Vice President, Sports Medicine and Performance, Los Angeles Rams
  • Allen Sills, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, National Football League
  • DeMarcus Ware, 9-time Pro Bowl NFL Player, Super Bowl Champion, Founder of Driven To Win and 3VOLT Fitness
  • Gary Vaynerchuk, Chairman, VaynerX, CEO, VaynerMedia, Co-Founder, Resy and Empathy Wines

To date, 1st and Future has awarded a combined total of $900,000 to entrepreneurs and data scientists over six years. Former winning innovations were featured throughout the show, many of which are now used in the NFL, such as Mobile Virtual Player (MVP)'s robotic tackle dummy and Protect3d's custom protective devices. Nike and NFL Partner to Grow Girls Flag Football in the US

Collaborating to inspire the next generation of female athletes, Nike and the NFL announced a new grant initiative that commits a total of $5 million in product to growing flag football within high school athletics.

This multi-year initiative will provide a one-time donation of up to $100,000 in product to state athletic associations that offer girls flag football as a high school sport or demonstrate progress by way of a pilot program beginning in 2021. First to receive the grant will be the state of Florida, which has promoted girls flag football for more than ten years and is the home state of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Product will include flag football uniforms, socks and accessories such as sports bras, all of which will be distributed to each participating state’s governing interscholastic or athletic association at their discretion. At present, only six states sanction high school flag football for girls (Alaska, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Nevada and New York), but financial support may help remove operational barriers so more states can introduce girls flag football programs.

“The expansion of girls flag football is essential to the growth of the game and preservation of the values it has contributed to society for decades,” says Troy Vincent, NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations. “Girls flag demonstrates that football is for all, and the greater the participation, the stronger the game, and the more young women can build the transferrable skills football provides for achieving success in life.”

In addition to the grant initiative, Nike is evolving its 11-Online football training series to include a learning track specifically for flag football athletes. It will feature how-to drills with comprehensive training instruction, including team-building and leadership development. In addition, Nike’s Stronger Than One Series will launch a film focused on highlighting women and young girls who are blazing paths forward in football.

Super Bowl LV Preview and Capsule

On Sunday, February 7, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will meet in Super Bowl LV (6:30 PM ET, CBS) at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. The Buccaneers are the first team ever to appear in a Super Bowl played in its home stadium.

Including the postseason, Chiefs quarterback PATRICK MAHOMES (44-9, .830) and Buccaneers quarterback TOM BRADY (263-80, .767) have the highest and third-highest winning percentages among starting quarterbacks (minimum 50 starts) since 1950.

Super Bowl LV is the first Super Bowl between the starting quarterbacks who won each of the two most recent Super Bowls [Mahomes won SB LIV with Kansas City; Brady won SB LIII with New England] and the first Super Bowl between starting quarterbacks who have each won at least one Associated Press Most Valuable Player Award and one Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Award prior to the matchup.

Brady (43 years, 188 days old on Super Bowl Sunday) and Mahomes (25 years, 143 days old on Super Bowl Sunday) are set to have the largest age differential (18 years, 45 days) between opposing starting quarterbacks in Super Bowl history.

The Chiefs and Buccaneers previously met at Raymond James Stadium in Week 12, with Kansas City earning a 27-24 win. Mahomes (462 passing yards) and Brady (345) combined for 807 passing yards, the most combined passing yards between two opposing quarterbacks in a single game in 2020. Chiefs wide receiver TYREEK HILL registered 269 receiving yards and three touchdown catches in the contest and became the third player with at least 200 receiving yards in a single quarter since 1980. The Buccaneers have won each of their past seven games, including the postseason, since Week 12 while Kansas City enters Super Bowl LV having won 12 straight games started by Mahomes, including the postseason.

Here's what's at stake in Super Bowl LV:

With a Kansas City win…

  • The Chiefs would record their third Super Bowl victory and become the first team to earn consecutive Super Bowl titles since the 2003-04 New England Patriots (Super Bowls XXXVIII and XXXIX). Kansas City previously won Super Bowls IV and LIV.
  • Head coach ANDY REID would win his second Super Bowl and at age 62, become the oldest head coach to win back-to-back Super Bowl championships, surpassing Pro Football Hall of Famer VINCE LOMBARDI (age 54 in Super Bowl II). Reid would have 18 career postseason victories, surpassing Pro Football Hall of Famer JOE GIBBS (17 postseason victories) for the fourth-most in NFL history.
  • At age 25, quarterback PATRICK MAHOMES would become the youngest starting quarterback to win multiple Super Bowl titles and would join TOM BRADY as the only starting quarterbacks to win the Super Bowl in two of their first four career seasons.

With a Tampa Bay victory…

  • The Buccaneers would win their second Super Bowl (XXXVII) and become the seventh club to win the Super Bowl as a Wild Card team.
  • Head coach BRUCE ARIANS would win his first Super Bowl and at age 68, would become the oldest head coach to win a Super Bowl, surpassing BILL BELICHICK (age 66 in Super Bowl LIII).
  • Quarterback TOM BRADY would win his seventh Super Bowl, extending the mark for the most by any player ever, and would join PEYTON MANNING as the only starting quarterbacks to win Super Bowls with multiple franchises.

Kansas City won its second consecutive AFC Championship with a 38-24 win over Buffalo. Quarterback PATRICK MAHOMES, in leading the Chiefs back from an early 9-0 deficit, passed for 325 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions for a 127.6 rating. He now has 17 career postseason touchdown passes, surpassing RUSSELL WILSON (16) for the most postseason touchdown passes by a quarterback in his first four seasons in NFL history.

In seven career postseason starts, Mahomes has a 109.8 passer rating, the highest mark by a quarterback in postseason history (minimum 200 attempts). Mahomes is expected to become the youngest quarterback in NFL history (25 years and 143 days old on date of Super Bowl LV) to start two Super Bowls, surpassing RUSSELL WILSON, who was 26 years and 64 days old at the time of his second Super Bowl start (SB XLIX).

Tight end TRAVIS KELCE recorded 13 receptions, the most in a single Championship Game in league history, for 118 yards and two touchdowns in the win and tied with Pro Football Hall of Famers SHANNON SHARPE (13 receptions on Jan. 9, 1994) and KELLEN WINSLOW SR. (13 receptions on Jan. 2, 1982) for the most receptions by a tight end in a single postseason game in NFL history. It also marked his fifth career postseason game with at least 100 receiving yards, the most by a tight end in postseason history.

Kelce ranks second among tight ends in postseason annals in receptions (73), receiving yards (859) and touchdown receptions (nine), trailing only Tampa Bay's ROB GRONKOWSKI (83 receptions for 1,206 yards and 12 touchdowns) in each category.

Wide receiver TYREEK HILL had a postseason franchise record 172 receiving yards in the AFC Championship Game. Hill and Kelce, who each had at least 100 receiving yards in the AFC Divisional Playoffs against Cleveland, are the first pair of teammates to register 100-or-more receiving yards in consecutive games within the same postseason in league annals.

Since 2018, Hill and Kelce have combined for 8,770 receiving yards, including the postseason, and surpassed the Pro Football Hall of Fame duo of CRIS CARTER and RANDY MOSS (8,695 combined receiving yards from 1998-2000) for the most receiving yards by a pair of teammates over a three-season span, including the playoffs, in NFL history.

Defensive end FRANK CLARK registered two sacks against Buffalo and became the 14th player since 1982, when the individual sack became an official statistic, to record at least 10 career postseason sacks. Clark has recorded a sack in four of his five postseason games with Kansas City, including a sack in Super Bowl LIV last season. Safety TYRANN MATHIEU has four passes defensed in his past five postseason games and recorded an interception against the Buccaneers in Week 12. Rookie cornerback LA'JARIUS SNEED has registered a sack in each of Kansas City's two postseason games this year and is the first rookie defensive back with two postseason sacks since 1982. The Chiefs have allowed 24-or-fewer points in four consecutive postseason games.

Tampa Bay earned a trip back home for Super Bowl LV with a 31-26 win at Green Bay. The Buccaneers have scored at least 30 points in each of their first three games this postseason and can become the first team in NFL history to score 30 points in four consecutive playoff games within a single postseason.

Tampa Bay, which missed the postseason in 2019, is the fourth team in the past five years to appear in the Super Bowl the season after missing the playoffs. The Buccaneers, with victories over No. 1-seeded Green Bay and No. 2-seeded New Orleans, are the 11th team since 1990 and first since the 2012 Baltimore Ravens to defeat the top two seeds from their own conference in the same postseason.

Quarterback TOM BRADY threw three touchdown passes against the Packers and became the fourth quarterback in NFL history to lead multiple franchises to Super Bowl appearances in league history. He is appearing in an NFL-record 10th Super Bowl and holds Super Bowl records for career passing yards (2,838), single-game passing yards (505 in Super Bowl LII), career passing touchdowns (18) and Super Bowl titles (six). Brady is the postseason all-time leader in completions (1,085), passing yards (12,248), passing touchdowns (80) and wins (33).

Running back LEONARD FOURNETTE recorded a 20-yard touchdown run in the NFC Championship and has seven total touchdowns (six rushing, one receiving) in six career postseason games. He can join Pro Football Hall of Famer TERRELL DAVIS (1997) and LARRY FITZGERALD (2008) as the only players with a touchdown in four consecutive playoff games within the same postseason in NFL history. Wide receiver MIKE EVANS has a touchdown reception in each of the Buccaneers' past two postseason games and recorded two touchdown catches in Week 12 against Kansas City. Wide receiver CHRIS GODWIN led the team with 110 receiving yards in the NFC Championship and registered eight receptions for 97 yards in the last meeting against Kansas City. Gronkowski had 106 receiving yards in Week 12 against the Chiefs and has 23 receptions for 297 yards and three touchdowns in four career Super Bowl appearances.

Tampa Bay led the league in rushing defense (80.6 rushing yards allowed per game) for the second consecutive season while recording the most sacks (48) by a Buccaneers defense since 2000 (55 sacks). Linebacker DEVIN WHITE became the first player since at least 2000 with at least 140 tackles (140) and nine sacks (nine) in a single season. He recorded 11 tackles with an interception and fumble recovery in his playoff debut in the Divisional round against New Orleans and then totaled a postseason franchise record 15 tackles with a fumble recovery at Green Bay in the NFC Championship. Since entering the league in 2012, linebacker LAVONTE DAVID ranks second in tackles (1,123), third in tackles for loss (128) and fourth in forced fumbles (24). Linebacker JASON PIERRE-PAUL had his first career multi-sack postseason game against Green Bay and has seven tackles for loss with six passes defensed in seven career playoff games.

The Buccaneers defense has recorded seven takeaways (five interceptions, two fumble recoveries) and five sacks this postseason, both the most among playoff teams. Linebacker SHAQUIL BARRETT registered three sacks in the NFC Championship and joined Pro Football Hall of Famer WARREN SAPP (Jan. 4, 1998) as the only Buccaneers with three sacks in a single postseason game since 1982. Cornerback SEAN MURPHY-BUNTING has recorded an interception in all three of Tampa Bay's games this postseason, becoming the fourth player to record an interception in each of his first three career postseason games in the Super Bowl era, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers AENEAS WILLIAMS (first four postseason games) and ED REED (three), as well as JASON SEHORN (three).

STATEMENT FROM NFL COMMISSIONER ROGER GOODELL AND JANE GOODELL

We extend our deepest condolences to Art Rooney and the entire Rooney family with the passing of his mother and our friend Patricia.

Patricia represented the Rooney family and the Steelers with extraordinary grace, dignity, and integrity. Patricia was passionately devoted to her faith, the wonderful family she and Dan raised and adored, the Pittsburgh community and the Steelers' organization. She was also one of the most passionate football fans you could ever meet and very proud of the number of female fans around the world.

We will greatly miss her as will the many people whose lives she touched throughout her community, and the NFL.
