The Way Up - Chris Long & The Waterboys' Documentary to Premiere on NFL Network Friday, Dec. 28

Two-Hour Special Narrated by Award-Winning Actress Uma Thurman Premieres Friday, December 28 at 8:00 PM ET
"I hope by sharing our story, others will be inspired to get involved and help us get water to one million people." – Chris Long

On Friday, December 28 at 8:00 PM ET, NFL Network premieres The Way Up – Chris Long & The Waterboys, a two-hour documentary produced by NFL Films.
Narrated by award-winning actress Uma ThurmanThe Way Up chronicles what it means to play for a cause for Super Bowl champion and Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Chris Long, whose legacy of service stretched from villages in Tanzania to communities across the U.S.
The special opens with the trek to the peak of Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro taken this past February by a group of NFL players and military veterans known as The Waterboys. Led by Long and former Seattle Seahawks player and Green Beret Nate Boyer, The Waterboys summited the largest free-standing mountain in the world to bring attention to the current water crisis in Tanzania. Joined by current NFL player Connor Barwin along with former NFL players Vince YoungSteven JacksonTom Santi, and MMA star Justin Wren, their climb represents the hundreds of miles that Tanzanians walk every month to ferry dirty water back to their villages just to survive.
"Sharing our 'Conquering Kili' program and telling this story is deeply personal to me," said Long. "It was my first climb up Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2013 that began my lifelong commitment to the clean water cause, and now I get to share that every year with a team of military combat veterans and athletes. I am thrilled to be a part of The Way Up film project. I hope by sharing our story, others will be inspired to get involved and help us get water to one million people."
The Waterboys' journey came at the end of an unforgettable 2017 for Long. Following a Super Bowl title with the New England Patriots in 2016, Long joined the Eagles in 2017, hoping to contribute to a young team on the rise, while also looking to boost awareness for his philanthropic initiatives. By season's end, Long had gained national attention for the decision to donate his entire year's salary toward creating educational equity, while his on-field efforts helped the Eagles win their first Super Bowl in franchise history.
"Chris Long demonstrates true heroism as he leaves Minneapolis a Super Bowl Champion and ascends Mt. Kilimanjaro as an inspiring champion for clean water," said Rick Qualliotine, NFL Vice President and Executive Producer of the film. "NFL Films chronicles this epic journey from the 50 to the 19,341 with its celebrated storytelling."
The special also delves into the tragic events that unfolded in Long's hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia in July 2017 and how that dark moment sparked Long to join his fellow teammates in speaking up about racial inequalities that still reverberate across America. The Way Up features interviews with Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and safetyMalcolm Jenkins on the impact of Long's cause efforts on the Eagles organization, the Philadelphia community and beyond.
The Waterboys and Chris Long Foundation work to provide clean, accessible drinking water to communities in need. As a part of that effort, the "Conquering Kili" program unites combat veterans and NFL alumni toward the common goal of conquering Africa's highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, while raising funding for wells that transform communities through the gift of clean water. SEVEN INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS COMPETE FOR A SPOT IN THE NFL INTERNATIONAL PLAYER PATHWAY PROGRAM
Instituted in 2017, the program aims to provide elite international athletes the opportunity to compete at the NFL level, improve their skills, and ultimately earn a spot on an NFL roster.
The league has identified seven top athletes from five countries that will compete for a place in the 2019 program. Given the program’s success to date, the NFL widened its search for international talent, with players from Brazil and Mexico participating for the first time.   Athletes from Australia, Germany and the United Kingdom will again be represented, including two professional Rugby players, Valentine Holmes and Christian Wade, who are attempting to cross over to the NFL.
David Bada (Germany), Moubarak Djeri (Germany), Valentine Holmes (Australia), Jakob Johnson (Germany), Dural Neto (Brazil), Maximo Sanchez (Mexico) and Christian Wade (United Kingdom) will begin training in the United States next month and will have the opportunity to showcase their talents to NFL club scouts in March in hopes of being signed as a free agent or being selected for a 2019 practice squad position through the International Player Pathway Program.
One of the NFL’s eight divisions, to be chosen at random, will receive international players should they not be signed to free agent contracts.  At the conclusion of training camp, players will be eligible for an international player practice squad exemption with teams being given an exemption for an eleventh practice squad member – ineligible to be activated during the season.
For the fourth consecutive season, the journey of these prospects will be documented through the NFL Undiscovered series. Watch the previous three seasons of NFL Undiscovered on the NFL’s YouTube and Facebook channels, including the 2018 series
Highlights from the program to date include:
MORITZ BÖHRINGER, Tight End/Wide Receiver (Germany), Age: 25 – Cincinnati Bengals
In 2016, Böhringer was selected in the sixth round of the NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings, becoming the first player to be drafted directly from European football.  He spent the 2016 season on the Vikings practice squad.  Böhringer is currently on the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad as part of the 2018 International Player Pathway Program.
JORDAN MAILATA, Tackle (Australia), Age: 21 – Philadelphia Eagles
The 2018 NFL Draft culminated an exciting time for Mailata, a past program participant.  The Samoan-born Australian former professional rugby league player for the South Sydney Rabbitohs was drafted in the seventh round by the Philadelphia Eagles (thereby making him ineligible for the International Player Pathway Program).  Converted to football full-time early in 2018, the 6-8, 350-pounder impressed NFL scouts at various workouts with his strength, footwork and athleticism, and continued his football journey with the Eagles during the 2018 season as the youngest player on their roster.
EFE OBADA, Defensive End (UK), Age: 26 – Carolina Panthers
Obada was raised in London after arriving from the Netherlands at age 10.  He signed as a free agent for the Dallas Cowboys in 2015 after playing only five games of amateur football with the London Warriors. He played in the preseason for the Cowboys and spent part of the 2015 season on the club's practice squad. He has since had spells on the rosters of the Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons before joining the Carolina Panthers practice squad as part of the 2017 International Player Pathway Program. In 2018, Obada become the first player from the NFL International Pathway program to make a 53-man roster.  In Week 3 against the Cincinnati Bengals, Obada played his first regular season game, earning NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors for his one-sack, one-interception performance.

NFL ANNOUNCES INAUGURAL BIG DATA BOWL
-- NFL FOOTBALL ANALYTICS COMPETITION WILL BE HELD AT THE 2019 SCOUTING COMBINE IN INDIANAPOLIS --
The National Football League today announced the inaugural NFL Big Data Bowl, a football analytics competition affording college students and professionals the opportunity to utilize historical data sets of the same player tracking data used by teams and suggest innovations about how football is played and coached.
Finalists will have the unique opportunity to present to league and club personnel at the 2019 Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, accessing NFL player tracking data used by teams to analyze league trends and develop on-field strategies.
Beginning today, participants can sign up for the competition via ops.nfl.com/big-data-bowl in one of two competing categories – an undergraduate/graduate student division and an open division for participants not in higher education. Upon registering, participants will be emailed information on how to access the data to begin their submission.
Historical sets of both traditional and player tracking stats are available to participants, who are challenged to rethink player evaluation tools and innovate the way football is played and coached. NFL player tracking, also known as Next Gen Stats, is the capture of real-time location data, speed and acceleration for every player on every play on every inch of the field. Sensors throughout the stadium track tags placed on players' shoulder pads, charting individual movements within inches.
“As the sports analytics community continues to expand and progress, we are excited to host an analytics competition focusing on creative and innovative ways to approach and use football data,” said DAMANI LEECH, the NFL’s Senior Vice President of Football Strategy and Business Development. “The NFL and its clubs use of football analytics continues to grow and focusing the competition on college students and young professionals allows us to hear from the next generation of young minds that will help shape the industry in the years to come.”
Submissions using NFL-provided data fall under three themes: “Understanding On-Field Speed,” “Proposing a Rule Change” and “Identifying the Best Receiver-Route Combinations.”
The Big Data Bowl is the latest example of the league’s commitment to advancing the game through data science and engineering. 1st and Future presented by Arrow Electronics, the NFL's annual Super Bowl pitch competition, is designed to spur innovation in athlete safety and performance. This year, for the first time, 1st and Future features a new category, the NFL Punt Analytics Competition, which also gives applicants access to exclusive NFL data sets to inform creative submissions about rule changes designed to reduce player injury during punt plays.
Eight finalists in the Big Data Bowl – four from each of the two participant categories – will earn an all-expenses paid trip to Indianapolis to showcase their work on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at the JW Marriott in Indianapolis on the first day of the 2019 Scouting Combine. The eight finalists will have an opportunity to present their findings in a five-minute presentation to a judging panel of NFL staff members, club personnel and industry-leading representatives before participating in an open forum in which they can answer specific questions related to their findings.
Two grand-prize winners will receive four tickets to any regular-season game of their choice, as well as a $1,000 gift certificate to NFLShop.com.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR – WEEK 16
WORST TO FIRSTAs the NFL enters Week 16, five postseason berths have been clinched and seven remain up for grabs. Nineteen of the league’s 32 teams remain in contention for a trip to Super Bowl LIII and 14 of the 16 games on this week’s schedule feature at least one team still alive in the race to Atlanta.
For the 2018 NFL Playoff Scenarios for Week 16, click here.
Two teams – the Chicago Bears (NFC North) and Los Angeles Chargers (playoff berth) – clinched a berth in the 2018 NFL postseason last week. The Bears, who finished in fourth place in the NFC North last season, completed a “worst-to-first” turnaround in 2018. The Houston Texans (10-4), who finished in last in the AFC South in 2017, can clinch the division title at Philadelphia (1:00 PM ET, CBS) with a win or tie or if both the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans lose or tie.
In 15 of the past 16 seasons, at least one team has finished in first place in its division the season after finishing in last or tied for last place. Since the 12-team playoff format began in 1990, at least four teams have qualified for the playoffs in every season that were not in the postseason the year before.
