TORONTO’S DeROZAN AND UTAH’S HAYWARD NAMED NBA EASTERN AND WESTERN CONFERENCE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

The Toronto Raptors’ DeMar DeRozan and the Utah Jazz’s Gordon Hayward today were named NBA Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played Monday, Jan. 9 through Sunday, Jan. 15.

DeRozan led the Raptors to a 3-0 week, averaging 30.7 points (second in the East) on 51.5 percent shooting to go with 7.3 rebounds.  The 27-year-old guard opened the week by posting season highs of 41 points and 13 rebounds in a 114-106 win over the Boston Celtics on Jan. 10.  The performance marked the two-time All-Star’s third 40-point game of the season.  He closed the week by tallying 23 points, five rebounds and five assists in 28 minutes in a 116-101 win over the New York Knicks on Jan. 15. 

Hayward averaged 23.7 points on 73.5 percent shooting (fourth in the West) and added 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists as the Jazz won all three of its games.  The 26-year-old forward shot 10-for-12 from the field on his way to 28 points in a 100-92 win over the defending champion Cleveland Cavaliers on Jan. 10. Hayward tied a season high with four three-pointers against the Cavaliers and shot 60.0 percent (9-for-15) from behind the arc for the week.

Jan. 10 vs. Boston: Logged season highs with 41 points and 13 rebounds in a 114-106 win over the Celtics. 

Jan. 13 vs. Brooklyn: Scored 28 points and added four rebounds in a 132-113 victory against the Nets.

Jan. 15 vs. New York: Finished with 23 points, five rebounds and five assists in a 116-101 win over the Knicks.

Gordon Hayward, Utah Jazz

Jan. 10 vs. Cleveland: Shot 10-for-12 from the field and scored 28 points to go with nine rebounds in a 100-92 win over the Cavaliers.

Jan. 13 vs. Detroit: Scored 20 points on 8-for-12 shooting and added four rebounds and three assists in a 110-77 victory against the Pistons.

Jan. 14 vs. Orlando: Tallied 23 points, seven assists and five rebounds in a 114-107 win over the Magic.

Other nominees for the NBA Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week were Boston’s Isaiah Thomas, the LA Clippers’ DeAndre Jordan and Chris Paul, Miami’s Hassan Whiteside, Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook, Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid, Phoenix’s Devin Booker and Toronto’s Jonas Valanciunas.

Clutch NBA: 7 al 13 de noviembre

          Esta fue la semana de Harden vs Westbrook. Los dos baluartes de la NBA marcan el paso en la temprana contienda para el MVP, no tan solo por sus impresionantes números, si no también por que están trayendo victorias a sus respectivos equipos. Harden comenzó la semana con 32 puntos, 6 rebotes y 15 asistencias en Washington, luego ante San Antonio logró un triple double con 24 puntos, 12 rebotes y 15 asistencias y cerró la semana con otro triple double ante los Spurs con 25 puntos, 11 rebotes y 13 asistencias. Houston se fue 2-1 en la semana. OKC tuvo marca de 1-3 con Westbrook anotando 14 con 11 asistencias ante Miami, coló 36 puntos con 7 rebotes y 7 asistencias en la derrota ante Toronto, anotó 29 con 14 rebotes y 9 asistencias en la derrota 110-108 ante los Clippers y logró el triple double #40 en su carrera con 41 puntos, 12 rebotes y 16 asistencias en derrota ante el Orlando de su ex compañero Ibaka, quien anotó en el juego su total más alto con 31 puntos. Sin duda estos dos armadores son los Jugadores Clutch de la Semana; pero tendrán compañía. Hay un 3er candidato para un temprano MVP que juega en Toronto y se apellida DeRozan. DeRozan llevó a los Raptors a una marca perfecta de 3-0 anotando 37, 34 y 33 puntos en esos juegos.

          LeBron James se convirtió en el jugador más joven en llegar a los 27 mil puntos en su carrera, superando al gran Kobe Bryant. Si se mantiene saludable y consistente no dudo que destrone al gran Jabbar. Los Cavs recibieron su 1era derrota de la temporada al caer 110-106 ante los Hawks y 28 puntos de Schroder. Atlanta también derrotó a Chicago y Phoenix para terminar con marca de 3-0 en la semana. Wade tuvo un retorno bien emotivo a Miami y sus Bulls salieron airosos 98-95. Wade anotó 13 con 7 rebotes y 6 asistencias, aparte de recibir tremenda ovación. ¿Y Pat Riley a donde está? Jimmy Butler tuvo una semana sólida  anotando 20, 39, 20 y 37. Los Bulls tuvieron una buena semana con marca de 3-1. Brook López despertó ofensivamente y los Nets ganaron dos de tres juegos mientras que Kemba Walker llevó a los Hornets a una semana de 2-2 anotando 24, 21, 40 y 21.

          Los Jazz terminaron su tour por la carretera con marca de 4-1 gracias a que Gordan Hayward promedió sobre 20 puntos por juego. Los Wolves tuvieron una semana de 2-2 gracias a juegos de 37 puntos de LaVine y 47 puntos de Wiggins. Los Warriors se fueron 4-0 con Curry anotando 46 junto con una nueva marca de bombazos al colar 13 de 17 intentos ante los Pelicans. Curry anotó 33 ante Denver y 30 ante los Suns. La racha de Durant de anotar sobre 20 puntos terminó en 72 juegos seguidos al colar solo 18 puntos ante Denver. Los Clippers se fueron 4-0 y siguen con paso firme con marca de 9-1 gracias a la combinación de Paul & Griffin. Son 6 las victorias seguidas. Los Lakers siguen teniendo el mejor banco de la NBA, liderados por Lou Williams, su marca fue de 2-2 en la semana. Anthony Davis sigue siendo el mejor jugador en el peor equipo al colar 33, 34, 32 y 34 puntos.
