2026 NBA ALL-STAR GAME TO FEATURE NEW U.S. VS. WORLD COMPETITION
– Two U.S. Teams and One World Team in Round-Robin Tournament With Four 12-Minute Games –
NEW YORK, Nov. 11, 2025 – The National Basketball Association (NBA) and the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) today announced a new U.S. vs. World format for the 2026 NBA All-Star Game. NBC/Peacock will present the league’s annual midseason showcase on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT at Intuit Dome in Inglewood, Calif., home of the LA Clippers.
In the 2026 NBA All-Star Game, two teams of U.S. players and one team of international players (known as the World team) will compete in a round-robin tournament featuring four 12-minute games. The three teams will each have a minimum of eight players.
As in the past, 24 NBA All-Stars (12 from each conference) will be selected as follows: The five players honored as starters from each conference will be selected by fans (50% of the vote), current NBA players (25%) and a media panel (25%), and the seven players honored as reserves from each conference will be selected by NBA head coaches. This year, the All-Stars will be selected without regard to position. The process for assigning players to the two U.S. teams will be determined at a later date.
If NBA All-Star voting does not result in the selection of 16 U.S. players and eight international players (which can include American players with ties to other countries if necessary), then NBA Commissioner Adam Silver will select additional All-Stars to join either group to reach that minimum. In that case, at least one team would have more than eight players.
In the round-robin tournament, Team A will play Team B in Game 1. The winning team from Game 1 will take on Team C in Game 2, followed by the losing team of Game 1 meeting Team C in Game 3.
After Game 3, the top two teams by record will advance to face each other in the championship game (Game 4). If all three teams have a 1-1 record after Game 3, the tiebreaker would be point differential in each team’s two round-robin games.

NBA COMMISSIONER ADAM SILVER’S STATEMENT REGARDING THE PASSING OF LENNY WILKENS
NEW YORK, Nov. 9, 2025 – NBA Commissioner Adam Silver issued the following statement today regarding the passing of Basketball Hall of Famer Lenny Wilkens:
“Lenny Wilkens represented the very best of the NBA – as a Hall of Fame player, Hall of Fame coach, and one of the game’s most respected ambassadors. So much so that, four years ago, Lenny received the unique distinction of being named one of the league’s 75 greatest players and 15 greatest coaches of all time.
“But even more impressive than Lenny’s basketball accomplishments, which included two Olympic gold medals and an NBA championship, was his commitment to service – especially in his beloved community of Seattle where a statue stands in his honor. He influenced the lives of countless young people as well as generations of players and coaches who considered Lenny not only a great teammate or coach but also an extraordinary mentor who led with integrity and true class.
“I send my heartfelt condolences to Lenny’s wife, Marilyn; their children, Leesha, Randy and Jamee; and all those throughout the NBA community who were fortunate to be touched by Lenny’s leadership and generosity.”
NBA COMMISSIONER ADAM SILVER’S STATEMENT REGARDING THE PASSING OF PAUL TAGLIABUE
NEW YORK, Nov. 9, 2025 – NBA Commissioner Adam Silver issued the following statement today regarding the passing of former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue:
“Paul Tagliabue was not just a pioneering commissioner, he was a mentor and friend to me and so many others. With his vision, integrity and tenacity, he ushered in an unprecedented era of growth in the NFL. At the NBA, we also knew Paul as a former basketball standout at Georgetown University who was always available for advice and counsel.
“Among his many enduring lessons of leadership we remember was his understanding of the power of sports to bring people together and make a difference off the field of play, including most recently collaborating with our league to promote civic engagement around the country. Paul was that kind of selfless leader throughout his life and career.
“I send my deepest condolences to Paul’s family and everyone in the NFL family on the loss of a giant in professional sports.”
NBA REFEREE HEADSET COMMUNICATION TO BEGIN NOV. 1
NEW YORK, Oct. 31, 2025 – The National Basketball Association (NBA) announced today that NBA referees will use headsets to communicate in real time with the NBA Replay Center and one another, beginning with games on Nov. 1. The rollout is the first in a planned two-phased approach to utilize the new communication system, which is designed to improve game flow and enhance officiating accuracy.
In the first phase, each referee will have an earpiece clipped on their uniform. The referees will unclip the earpiece and place it in their ears only during instant replay review and as needed during other stoppages, but not during live play.
Pending evaluation of the first phase, the second phase of use will begin with earpieces being worn throughout the game, including during live play, beginning in January. During the second phase, referees will be able to communicate directly with the Replay Center and each other during at all times during the game. The second phase will run through at least the NBA All-Star break in February.
Prior to being implemented, the technology was tested extensively during NBA preseason games (2024 and 2025), NBA Summer League (2023-25) and the NBA G League Winter Showcase (2022-24).
The NBA will work closely with the National Basketball Referees Association throughout this process.
NBA BOARD OF GOVERNORS APPROVES SALE OF MAJORITY INTEREST IN THE LAKERS TO MARK WALTER
NEW YORK, Oct. 30, 2025 – The NBA Board of Governors has unanimously approved the sale of the majority interest in the Los Angeles Lakers to Mark Walter. The transaction is expected to close shortly.
The Buss family, which has owned a majority stake in the Lakers since Dr. Jerry Buss bought the team in 1979, will retain an ongoing interest. Jeanie Buss will remain the team’s Governor for a period of at least five years following the closing of the transaction.
“Mark Walter has a long association with our leagues, having served as a minority owner of the Lakers and as the principal owner of the WNBA’s Sparks for more than a decade,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. “As Mark assumes his role as majority owner of the Lakers, I have no doubt that he will be a committed steward of the team and a great addition to our league given his many successful ventures in business and sports.
“I also want to thank and congratulate Jeanie Buss and the Buss family for 46 years of transformational leadership and service. While this historic transaction transfers the Buss family’s majority interest in the Lakers, I am thrilled that Jeanie will remain the team’s Governor and an active and engaged member of our league.”
